NFL News - October 28th, 2009 - Written by Scott
No. 20 West Virginia will host South Florida on Friday night in a huge Big East matchup. The Mountaineers (6-1, 2-0) are currently in a three-way tie for the lead in the conference and will need a win to stay in contention. They are coming off a close 28-24 win over Connecticut on Saturday and have won four straight. After winning their first five games, the Bulls (5-2, 1-2) are currently on a two-game skid and lost last week to Pittsburgh 41-14. They were never in the game and had a miserable day on both sides of the ball and gained only 220 yards of total offense. West Virginia won their meeting with South Florida a year ago 13-7.
West Virginia has been fantastic with their running game so far this season. Noel Divine leads their group of backs with 912 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Mountaineers have been equally impressive in their passing game and are led by quarterback Jarrett Brown. Brown has thrown for 1,362 yards and 9 touchdowns. Jock Sanders, Bradley Starks, and Alric Arnett lead their group of receivers this year and have combined for 1,116 yards and 6 touchdowns. The Bulls defense has owned the Mountaineers in their last two meetings. West Virginia will need to improve as they have only averaged 15 points per game over this two game span with South Florida.
The Mountaineers' defense will need to improve against the pass after their performance last week. They allowed 378 yards through the air against UConn. They have been tough against the run and rank 7th nationally.
South Florida will look to rebound after their terrible performance last week against Pitt. Quarterback B.J. Daniels was held to just 90 yards passing on 8 attempts and was picked off twice. For the year, Daniels has passed for 864 yards and 7 touchdowns since taking over for injured Matt Grothe. He is also the team's leading rusher with 415 yards and 4 touchdowns. Moise Plancher leads their group of running backs with 299 yards and 4 touchdowns. Carlton Mitchell has emerged as the team's leading receiver with 410 yards and 3 touchdowns. They will need to somehow get their running game going against a tough Mountaineer run defense.
The Bulls run defense will be tested this week as they face a strong running team in West Virginia. They were pounded for 214 yards last week against Pitt and will need to improve drastically in order to be successful this Friday.
College Football Betting is sure to make this match up that more exciting to watch. West Virginia will be favored by 3 on the road against South Florida according to Betus Sportsbook.
