No. 5 Boise State Favored By 9 Over Tulsa

NFL News - October 14th, 2009 - Written by John

boise stateAfter a lackluster performance against UC Davis last week, a game in which No. 5 Boise State won, the Boise Broncos will get yet another chance to impress poll voters as they travel to Tulsa to play the Hurricanes on Wednesday night. The Broncos, who have won 27 games since 2007, are looking to get their first BCS bowl berth since their game against Oklahoma following the 2006 season. Tulsa (4-1) is coming off their 27-10 win over Rice and should provide what is likely the last real test for Boise State the remainder of the season. The two teams have not met since 2004 and Boise State won the offensive shootout 45-42.

The Broncos must improve on their red zone offense. Out of 27 trips inside the red zone, they have only converted 16 drives into touchdowns. They are led offensively by quarterback Kellen Moore. He has thrown for 1,217 yards and 13 touchdowns. Their rushing attack has been off and on all season. Jeremy Avery and D.J. Harper lead their group of backs and have combined for 725 yards and 4 touchdowns. Moore has a talented group of wide outs with six having over 100 yards receiving. Austin Pettis leads this group with 378 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Defensively for the Broncos, they have done a great job this season and have not allowed a first-quarter point all season. This has allowed Boise State to get out to early leads, but their defense has had a few meltdowns and have allowed their opponents to get back into the game. They will need to force some turnovers against Tulsa to keep their explosive offense off the field.

Tulsa's high powered offense has led the nation in total offense the past two years. An improved running game has opened things up for quarterback G.J. Kinne. Kinne has passed for 1,142 yards and 10 touchdowns this year. Jamad Williams, Kinne, and Charles Opeseyitan have combined for 495 yards and 4 touchdowns on the year. Wide receivers Damarius Johnson and Slick Shelley lead a group of great receivers, in which 5 have over 100 yard. They have combined for 583 yards and 4 touchdowns.

The Tulsa defense has been solid the entire season and their only breakdown was against Oklahoma. They have been strong against the run and have not allowed a rushing touchdown all season. They will need to pressure Boise's quarterback. The Hurricanes have shown they are capable of accomplishing this and have recorded 16 sacks this year. They also have 43 tackles for a loss.

Boise State comes into their game with Tulsa favored by 9 according to Betus Sportsbook with an over/under set at 53 1/2. They both possess explosive offenses so this should be a great shootout.
