NFL News - October 14th, 2009 - Written by Scott
The Big East conference should begin to take form as No. 8 Cincinnati Bearcats travels to No. 21 South Florida on Thursday night. This will mark the first meeting while both teams have been ranked . Both teams are undefeated and will look to get at least a share of the conference lead with a win. South Florida got past Syracuse in their last game 34-20 and Cincinnati routed Miami (OH) 37-13. The Bearcats won their last meeting with the Bulls back in 2007, 38-33.
After losing their staring quarterback Matt Grothe for the season, concerns surrounding the rest of their season were abundant. This has all changed as the electrifying freshman, B.J. Daniels, has stepped in and been absolutely magical for an offense that averages 413 yards per game. He has only 2 starts under his belt coming into the game with the Bearcats, but has appeared in all 5 of the Bulls' games. Daniels has thrown for 602 yards and 6 touchdowns. He has the ability to hurt a defense with his legs as well and has rushed for a team best 291 yards and 3 touchdowns. Moise Plancher leads their running back group with 239 yards and 4 touchdowns. Daniels has found his go-to guy at receiver in Carlton Mitchell. The 6-foot-4 wide receiver has 377 yards and 3 touchdowns.
South Florida is coming into the game boasting one of the nations best defenses. They are holding their opponents to just 11 points per game. The Bulls have been especially strong inside the red zone and have only allowed 4 touchdowns in 13 attempts. This game will be the biggest test their defense has faced this year as they face one of the best offenses in the country.
Cincinnati has been explosive on the offensive side of the ball all season. They are third nationally in scoring with 43.2 points per game and are averaging 468 total yards. Quarterback Tony Pike leads the 7th best passing attack in the country. He has thrown for 1,493 yards and 13 touchdowns. Their rushing attack is led by Jacob Ramsey and Isaiah Pead. They have combined for 503 yards and 6 touchdowns. Pike has a talented group of receivers and has found great chemistry with Mardy Gilyard. Gilyard has 517 yards receiving and 7 touchdowns.
The Bearcats defense has spent alot of time on the field the past few games due to their offense striking so quickly. After two not so impressive performances in their last two games, Cincinnati will need to regroup and must find a way to contain Daniels and the USF offense.
According to Betus sportsbook, Cincinnati will be favored on the road against South Florida by 3. The over/under is set at 50.
