NFL News - October 4th, 2009 - Written by John
It might as well have been two completely different games. One with points at a premium. One with a point sweepstakes.
LSU and Georgia pounded each other for three quarters, only scratching out six total points, then blew the barn open with 27 in the fourth quarter, leading LSU to a 20-13 win Saturday. It was the first time the Tigers had beaten Georgia in four years. Charles Scott rumbled for the game-winner, taking a hand-off from Georgia's 33, bouncing out wide to the left, and running over two defenders. He seemed to be pulled down at the line of scrimmage, but fought off the tackler and dashed the rest of the way untouched to stun the Bulldogs. His score came with 46 seconds left on the clock and Georgia quarterback Joe Cox was picked off on the ensuing drive to end it.
"I would rather give it to Charles and let him pound it in there," said quarterback Jordan Jefferson. "Charles is a big power back. I didn't want to pass it. That situation required a running play. I saw the hole, and once he hit it, I knew it was a TD."
It was a dramatic turn of events from 20 seconds earlier in the game, when Georgia appeared to have stolen the game away. Quarterback Joe Cox was only able to manage one scoring drive in the entire game, and that came on fourth-and-goal from the one. The offense, in fact, only managed 49 yards in the entire first half but only trailed 12-7 with two minutes remaining.
When they got the ball back, Cox led the Bulldogs all the way down to the red zone on after a 46-yard pass to Tavarres King. Then A.J. Green got all Randy Moss and gobbled up a jump-ball in the corner of the end zone, reaching over the LSU corner and stealing it away. It gave Georgia it's first lead of the game and sent the red and black crowd into bedlam. But a celebration penalty ensued and forced the home team to kickoff from their own 15-yard line. It allowed LSU's Trindon Holliday to return the kick all the way down to Georgia's 43-yard line and Scott did the rest.
"It's tough," said Cox. "It's not something I'd want anybody to feel. We worked a long time for this game and talked about this game a lot. It just slipped away. It's not a good feeling."
