NFL News - October 23rd, 2009 - Written by Scott
Spencer Fisher will look to attempt to move back up the ladder for a title fight as he takes on veteran Joe Stevenson in UFC 104 on Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. On two previous occasions, Fisher appeared to be headed towards the top of the lightweight ranks, but faltered in these two runs and lost in bouts that sent him backwards. Fisher, 24-4, will get another shot once again against a proven fighter in Stevenson. Both fighters bring different styles and it should turn out to be an exciting fight.
Fisher will have a tough time initiating his style of fighting against Stevenson. Fisher excels in his preferred form of fighting which is a stand up brawl. He will need to find a way to land his powerful strikes early to wear down his tough opponent. Based on his past fighting history, he will have needed to improve on his takedown defense in order to be successful. Stevenson does most of his damage on the mat and this could pose a problem for Fisher. He doesn't have the advantage in reach as far as punching is concerned and it will be important for him to get inside to land punches without being taken to the ground.
Stevenson, 35-10, does his best work on the mat. He has been dominant when the fight goes to the ground. He will need to be able to withstand some powerful blows issued by Fisher and if he can do this, should fare well in the fight. He has a great ability to take his opponents down and force them into submission. He will attempt to steal each round by controlling Fisher and keeping him on the ground. Many of his wins have come by decision, so his stamina is well noted and should be an advantage in the fight.
For those of you who are doing some UFC Betting, Joe Stevenson comes into this fight against Spencer Fisher as the favorite with betting odds set at -270 according to Bodog sportsbook. Fisher's odds are set at +210. If the majority of the fight stays on the mat, Stevenson without a doubt has the advantage. If Fisher can keep the bout upright, then the table is turned. Which fighter can control the fight with their style should prevail in this one.
