The 16th ranked Oregon Ducks are looking to avenge their 37-32 last season loss in tonight's opener against 14th ranked Boise State in what should be a high scoring affair. Boise State comes into the game riding a 49 regular season game home winning streak. This is a crucial game for Boise State as this could be the only top 25 team they face all season. If they win, they could possibly go 13-0 and ultimately grab a BCS bid. The winner should find themselves top ten bound following tonight's game.
An easy game to start the season would have been nice for Oregon. The Ducks come into tonight's game looking to fill holes on both the offensive and defensive lines and are inexperienced at the receiver position. First year coach Chip Kelly does not seem too concerned though.
“These are the games you dream about playing,” said coach Chip Kelly, who inherited the reins from Mike Bellotti, who retired from coaching to become Oregon’s athletic director. “You don’t want to open against Johnson State or Adams State. You want to open up against somebody who is a tremendous football team, which Boise State is. We hope it’s an unbelievable atmosphere. Our players relish those situations and we just can’t wait to go play the game.”
The Ducks are looking to avoid any quarterback issues. Not only did they lose last year to the Broncos, they lost their starting quarterback, Jeremiah Masoli during the game. Masoli rebounded from the injury and was a great threat both in the air and on the ground last season. The Ducks have been very explosive on offense in Kelly's sread-option attack. Defensively, they will need to contain the Broncos quarterback Kellen Moore to escape with a win. They have three new starters on the defensive line and inexperience could come into play.
Boise State will open the season with it's toughest home game yet. The Broncos will look to improve on their running game which posted their worse rushing attack last season in the past five years. The have rebuilt their offensive line and do return many skill position players. Quarterback Kellen Moore, who passed for 3,486 yards in 2008, will lead this versatile offense tonight against the Ducks. The Broncos had one of the toughest defenses last year and this year should be no different. They only lost a few starters, but they had great depth at those positions so there should not be any drop off in production.
Beted has listed the odds on tonight's matchup. The money line is at Oregon at +135 and Boise State at -135. The Broncos are favord by 3 1/2 points and on the point spread, both teams are -110. The over/under for this matchup is at 63.5.
