Evander Holyfield Announces He's Coming Out Of Retirement

Sports Betting News - September 24th, 2009 - Written by Scott

holyfieldAt the age of 46, Evander Holyfield has announced that he is not ready to put up his gloves yet.  Holyfield plans on fighting in November in South Korea, but his opponent has yet to be named.  The four time heavyweight champion has lost his last two fights and has lost five out of his last twelve.  Many of his critics are against him coming out of retirement at such an old age and fear that he could get seriously injured by younger opponents.  Holyfield has beaten some of boxing's best in his career such as Mike Tyson, George Foreman, and Riddick Bowe.

"I will be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world," he said, repeating a familiar pledge. "I'm sure I will be champion next year sometime."

Holyfield has had some problems financially in the past and almost lost his house to foreclosure on two different occasions.  He has recently been seen in Taco Bell advertisements and has partnered with Global NES-Georgia to build a solar farm.  He has become very involved with the environment as of late and is on a mission to help solve global warming.  He also has plans to build a one acre organic garden on his property in Atlanta. This is probably the reasoning for changing his nickname from "The Real Deal" to "Lean Green Fighting Machine."

"I guess I'm lean and green," Holyfield said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "I'm pretty much going to do all I can to fight against global warming. I'll see what I can do to help and try to help other people who want to do the same thing."

Holyfield still feels he can become a champion again based on how he performed in his last fight with the 7'2" fighter from Russia Nikolai Valuez.  He lost the bout to a decision, but one of the three judges scored it a draw.

"He had the reach and the strength and the size, all that. And I still hit him more times than he hit me. How did I not win?" Holyfield asked. "I've got to fight a little harder next time. I fought hard and thought I fought hard enough to win, but obviously (the judges) didn't."

As he approaches the age of 47, it should be interesting to see if he still has not only ability, but the stamina to box again.
