Turns out a thrilling finish in the FedEx Cup is inevitable. With each of the top-four players still close enough to make some noise, Tiger Woods has a lot of outs to be crowned Player of The Year. If he wins, the trophy is his (as is the case for any of the players in the top-5. But if Kenny Perry holds his three-round lead, Woods would still win the FedEx Cup if he finishes second. With it, comes prestige, yes. But the sack of loot will do a lot to make up for the mid-season blunders as he returned from knee surgery. The winner of the tournament nets a $1.35 payout but the overall winner bags a $10 million bonus.
Perry leads heading into the final day by two strokes. His eight under leads the pack, followed by Woods at minus-six. Phil Mickelson and Sean O'Hair are both tied at four under while Padraig Harrington and Steve Marino are tied for fifth at three under.
If Perry wins and Woods falls to third or worse, Perry will win the title.
"There's a lot of scenarios out there," Perry said. "That will be neat to talk about it if that happens. I probably won't pay a lot of attention to the roars. If I can just kind of maintain what I'm doing right now and keep playing, I think we'll just see. There might be some excitement coming down the last couple holes. Everybody will kind of be figuring numbers and percentages and who falls where."
But that's not the only bullet he'll need to dodge. There is a possibility someone unmentioned could still win. As noted, any of the players in the top-five have outside chances of winning. With the complicated point system, Zach Johnson, Jim Furyk and Steve Stricker could all win the cup if they were to finish second behind Perry.
Stricker is the only one with a realistic shot at minus-one, meaning Perry's best allies will be Mickelson, O'Hair, or really anyone in between to have good rounds and turn away Woods and Stricker.
"I'll tell you this, it's not going to change my life if I win the $10 million," Perry said. "My life will stay the same. It'll definitely give me some opportunities to help some people. I want to start a foundation, there are some things I want to do for charities. I'll definitely be thinking of it out there, but if I win it or don't win it, it's not going to change anything."
It's not hard to believe him. He has only one five times in the past two season but ranks eighth on the all-time money list with over $30 million scored in his career.
