One of the most consistent drivers over the past two months has come away with yet another victory this year at the Chevy Rock & Roll 400. Denny Hamlin, the fourth seed in the Chase, came out with his second win of the year Saturday night in Richmond as he has raised some eyebrows around the racing world. With most of the attention this year focused on Joe Gibbs racing teammate Kyle Busch, Hamlin has gained a lot of confidence that he will carry with him throughout the Chase. He believes that he is going to win the Sprint Cup title and his win Saturday, according to him, was like winning the Daytona 500.
"I know how special that race is to everyone," he said of NASCAR's biggest race of the year. "But this one in particular, to me, especially after all the heartbreak ... it's by far the biggest win of my career and hopefully goes a long way for this race team over the next 10 weeks."
Hamlin led 289 of the laps during Saturday's race, a race that eliminated teammate Busch from the Chase. The final spot in the Chase went to Brian Vickers, who finished in seventh place Saturday. Vickers also knocked both Busch and Matt Kenseth out of contention. Busch and Kenseth are both left watching after the two drivers had made the Chase in it's first five years. Vickers finished eight points ahead of Busch to take the final spot as his fifth place finish on Saturday wasn't enough for him to move on. He will now turn his assistance and attention to his teammate Hamlin.
"All efforts are focused solely on the 11,'' Busch said. "I'll do my best to help Denny out and bring Joe Gibbs Racing a championship. Denny has a lot going forward, especially winning here. He's going to have a big momentum boost. They've got it going on.''
Driver Mark Martin is the top seed in this year's Chase. Followed by him are Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson. The rest of the field is compiled of Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Ryan Newman, Juan Pablo Montoya, and Greg Biffle.
The ten race Chase begins on September 20 at the New Hampshire Motor Speeday in Loudon. Hamlin is undoubtedly the hottest driver right now, but the field of twelve should put on quite a show over the next ten races.
