Mayweather Looks To Stay Undefeated In Fight with Marquez On Saturday

Sports Betting News - September 15th, 2009 - Written by John

floyd mayweatherFloyd Mayweather is stepping back into the ring on September 19 after almost a two year absence from boxing.  He will put his undefeated record on the line against Juan Manuel Marquez in a twelve round welterweight battle at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.  This fight had been postponed due to a rib injury suffered by Mayweather.  Mayweather feels that the layoff will not come into play during his fight with Marquez.

"I don't know if the two-year layoff is going to affect me, but I feel fast, I'm strong and my timing is there," Mayweather said. "I think the break actually helped, because I haven't had a break since '87. My body gets a chance to heal, and I just grew mentally as a person ... and I feel good."

Marquez will have an uphill battle to overcome, despite his come from behind victory back in February where he knocked out Juan Diaz.  Mayweather, the self proclaimed king of boxing, will utilize his speed and athleticism to overcome Marquez, who has added weight for this fight.  The difference in these two fighters is primarily that Marquez relies heavily on accurate punching and technique, while Mayweather will turn to his athletic ability and speed.  Marquez has ok hand speed, but not in the likes of his opponent.

In years past, Mayweather, who holds a record of 39-0,  has looked to retire his opponents before the final bell.  However,  his fighting style has changed as he tends to look to go the distance and rely on an unanimous decision.  Mayweather has an unique ability to roll away from his opponents' punches to set up a counter shot.  Known as one of the greatest defensive fighters of all time, he has the speed to back away from punches which should benefit him against Marquez who relies on power punches rather than a barrage of jabs.  The question remains for Mayweather as to whether or not he can respond if Marquez lands a few powerful punches.  Mayweather, throughout his career, has rarely even had to withstand even so much as just a minor cut.

Marquez will have to rely on his ring management and power punches to withstand the speedy Mayweather.  He has never been accused of ducking formidable opponents and should use his experience against these foes when he enters the ring with Mayweather. Marquez, 50-4-1, will need to be in best shape of his life and not let the added weight slow him down even more against the speedy Mayweather.

Bodog Sportsbook has the payout for Mayweather at -350 and for Marquez at +275.  The over/under for rounds is set at 11 1/2 with the under at -160 and the over at +120
