Serena Williams Throws Tantrum, Throws Game

Sports Betting News - September 13th, 2009 - Written by Glen

serena williamsSerena Williams lost her match against Kim Clijsters, an unseeded, unranked player. She lost it by (de)fault when a foot fault threw Serena into a rage, causing an outburst and threat against the line official.

Serena had, in a very abrasive manner, threatened to shove a ball down the throat of the official. The call was controversial in and of itself, and Serena had attempted to dispute the call. Regardless, Serena's opponent was awarded the game winning point for Serena's unsportsmanlike approach to the problematic, overzealous call. The point was docked from Serena's total, which prematurely ended the night. This was Serena's second outburst, as she had thrown her racket earlier in the evening.

After the dispute was settled and the game was handed to Clijsters, Serena once again tossed her racket into a pile and went to vigorously shake hands with the winner. Serena was in the spotlight for coming close to tying the record for the most Grand Slam singles titles, a record currently held by Billie Jean King. While she still has plenty of career time in which to accomplish this feat, she will forever be remembered for the unfortunate turn of events that led to her disqualification. Had she kept her cool, she may have advanced into the finals.

In a news conference later on in the evening, Williams stated "I'm just trying to move on." She will play in the next major tournament, the Australian Open, in January.

Just like in any other sport where a player will be penalized for verbally assaulting an official, Serena will have plenty of time to reflect upon her actions. Hopefully an incident such as this will not once again sully an otherwise impressive career.

Sports betting includes Tennis, and it is safe to say that any one who bet on Clijsters had cleaned up. Sportsbooks such as BetUS frequently take betting lines on tennis, and most tournaments are included.
