The Tennessee Volunteers will travel to Auburn on Saturday to face the Tigers in a great SEC matchup. Tennessee, 2-2 (0-1), rebounded from their loss to Florida two weeks ago and defeated Ohio 34-23. Auburn remained undefeated and demolished Ball State 54-30 last week. The Volunteers are trying to get their program back among the nation's elite. This game against Auburn will play a huge role in how far they have come. Their only two losses have been in close games and beating a strong SEC team like Auburn is very important to their program.
Tennessee finally got their offense back on track last week and was not relying totally on their running game. Quarterback Jonathan Crompton passed for 222 yards and 2 touchdowns. He only threw 1 interception during the game, which is a season low for him, but still has 8 for the season. On the year, he has 641 yards passing and 7 touchdowns. Running back Montario Hardesty had 140 yards against Ohio last week and now has 485 for the season. The key for the Volunteers all year has been their defense. Despite giving up 319 yards passing last week, they are holding opponents to just under 17 points a game. They need to improve on their pass rush against a good Auburn passing attack. Injuries have hindered the defense this year at the linebacker position and they lost starter Nick Reveiz last week for the season. This will be a huge factor as he was their leader on defense.
Auburn brings in the most balanced offense they have had in years and gained 560 total yards last week. Through four games, they have scored 181 total points compared to last year where they only had 208 the entire year. The offense is led by quarterback Chris Todd. He has already thrown for 1,012 yards and 11 touchdowns, with 9 coming in the past two games. The Tigers have also been wearing down defenses with their running game. They are 5th in the nation in rushing with 261.65 yards per game. The running back duo of Ben Tate and Onterio McCalebb have combined for 777 yards rushing so far this year. The defense has done an outstanding job with takeaways this year and already have 12 which ranks 5th nationally. This could be huge for the Tigers as Tennessee's quarterback has thrown 8 picks this year.
This matchup is going to be a close game according to BetUS sportsbook. They have Tennessee favored on the road against Auburn by 2.
