Sports Betting News - September 18th, 2009 - Written by Scott
Revenge is on the minds of the Texas Longhorns this week as Texas Tech comes to town Saturday. Texas Tech defeated then No. 1 ranked Texas last season on a touchdown pass with one second left to go in the game. Not only was it one of the most devastating losses in Longhorn history, the loss effected the rest of their season. It forced a three-way tie in the Big 12 South and knocked Texas out of a chance to play for the conference title. Oklahoma got the bid, a team that the Longhorns beat earlier in the season. The loss also kept Texas from a shot at a national title berth. However, Texas is a big favorite in this game. Both teams are 2-0 and this will be the conference opener for both teams.
The No. 2 ranked Texas offense has been stellar in their first two games. Despite playing much inferior opponents, the Longhorns are averaging 553 yards and 50 points a game this season. Quarterback Colt McCoy has led the offense with 654 yards passing and 5 touchdowns. Defensively, they must find a way to stop Texas Tech's quarterback Taylor Potts and the Red Raiders' spread offense. Most of their offense centers around him. Texas will need to pressure him often as he is making only his third career start. His previous two starts were not against the caliber of this Texas team though.
The Red Raiders have been absolutely explosive on offense, despite the loss of wide receiver Michael Crabtree. They also have a new starting quarterback, but they have not missed a beat at this position. Potts has already thrown for 869 yards and nine touchdowns. Their rushing attack has been non existent, but this can be attributed to their running plays generally consist of screen passes and dump passes. The offensive line must be able to handle the pressure of the Longhorn's pass rush to allow Potts time to throw. Through their first two games, the Red Raiders' defense is allowing only 232 yards per game, despite playing two much inferior opponents. They will have a hard time containing McCoy and the Texas offense which puts up points in the air and on the ground.
Texas enters the game with alot of motivation following last year's emotional loss to Texas Tech. The Red Raiders are huge underdogs on the road as the Longhorns are favored by 17 1/2. The over/under for this game Saturday is at 67 according to BetUS. Texas should not have too much of a problem in this game, but as history shows, anything can happen when these two teams collide.
