After a quick turnaround from Monday's finish at the Deutsche Bank Championship, pro golfers now turn to the third FedEx Cup playoff event, the BMW Championship, that opens today. The quick turnaround can be both physically and mentally draining on the pro golfers. Golfer Scott Verplank related this turnaround to another sport.
"I was talking to one of my football coaching buddies, driving out here, and I said, 'It's sort of like playing a Sunday night game and then you've got a Thursday night game,' " said PGA Tour veteran Scott Verplank. "You've got no turnaround so you don't have any time to waste. You've got to get prepared for your next opponent, which sits out there at about 9,000 yards long. You go from playing the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night and you've got the Steelers on Thursday. That's about how it is. You don't have a lot of time for rest and relaxation."
This year's BMW Championship will be without last year's FedEx Cup champion Vijay Singh, who was eliminated after just two weeks of playoffs. Notables, such as Tiger Woods, has played six of the past seven weeks. This is not normal for him, but he will need to reload quickly and finish no worse than third to surpass leader Steve Stricker for the lead in the FexEx Cup standings. He is the only player with an opportunity to do so. Out of seventy players scheduled to play, seven of these were outside of the top seventy going into last week's Deutsche bank Championship who played their way into BMW Championship this week.
Camilo Villeges and Garcia need to play well as they are in danger of not moving on after this week. Villeges is currently ranked 52nd and Garcia is at 55th. Both must finish in the top ten of the this week's tournament to move on. Villeges won his first PGA tour event last year at the BMW Championship and must repeat his performance once again this year to stay alive.
The BMW takes place once again at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club in Chicago after taking a break last year while the course was undergoing renovations. The course will feature new greens, re-positioned bunkers, and new tees which added to the length of the course.
Bodog Sportsbook has the entire field listed and their odds on winning this week's tournament. The top five are Tiger Woods at 7/4, Padraig Harrington at 10/1, Steve Stricker at 14/1, Jim Furyk at 22/1, and Phil Mickelson at 25/1. The rest of the field and their odds can be found at Bodog.com.
