Sports Betting News - September 25th, 2009 - Written by Scott
On Saturday night, Chris Arreola will attempt to shock the world as he looks to win the World Boxing Council heavyweight title in his bout with Vitali Klitschko at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Many critics question the experience of Arreola as he has not had any big marquee wins coming into the fight. He is a bruising puncher that will have a hard time against the 6'7' Klitschko. Klitschko comes into the fight with a 37-2 record with 36 knockouts. Arreola is undefeated with 27 wins and 24 knockouts. If Arreola comes out a winner, he will be the first Mexican-American to win the title. A victory for Arreola would be huge in his native country of Mexico, but probably just as big here as there has not been an American-born champion since 2007.
Arreola will bring alot of pressure to the fight, which might be of assistance against the older Klitshcko. Not known for his physique, he is however very quick for a man of his size and will move around the ring throwing quick combinations. It is also evident that he has a powerful punch with 24 knockouts in 27 fights. He must work hard to get inside on the taller Klitschko in order to be successful in this bout. He is not timid by any means as he has the ability to stand in the ring and trade punches with his opponents. Travis Walker did however send him to the canvas and it remains to be seen how the powerful punches he receives from Klitschko will affect him. Arreola has been training hard and pushing himself to limits he has not seen before to prepare for this fight in front of his home town.
"It's hard. I've never done anything like this before," he said. "We do cardio, core strength, lifting - and we train in the mornings, which I hate. We're doing all this stuff outside boxing that I never wanted to do before."
Klitschko has been plagued by injuries over the past few years but appears to be in the best shape of his life. He is known as one of the greatest punchers ever in the heavyweight division and this must be true based on his 97.2 knockout percentage. He is just a fundamentally sound boxer that uses his height advantage well. Arreola is a strong puncher and and can punch from different angles, but has never had to use these skills against a fighter the size of Klitschko.
Klitschko comes into the fight with as a huge favorite with a payout set at -600 according to Betus. The underdog, Arreola, has a payout set at +400.
