new york giants logoNew York Giants fans are pumped up for the 2009 New York Giants Season Preview. Giants fans will find that the Big Blue go into the 2009 season same fervor that was seen in the prior season. In 2008 the Giants won the division championship of the NFC east, but ultimately lost to the Eagles. Coach Tom Coughlin will be returning to hopefully add another Super Bowl win to the Giants record. The 2009 New York Giants season will be the third season Kevin Gilbride holds his position as the offensive coordinator for the team. The Giants have received a new and fresh defensive coordinator, Bill Sheridan. Sheridan spent four seasons as the Giants linebackers coach, but will now spearhead the whole defensive line. Al Holcomb joins the ranks of the Giants as the defensive quality control coach. He has spent the past three seasons as the defensive line coach for Lafayette. He is expected to tighten up the defense of the Giants, and should prove to be a wise choice. Another first year coach for the Giants is Jim Herrmann. He took Sheridan's place as the linebacker's coach. Prior to the Giants, he worked as the linebackers coach for the Jets. This all-star coaching staff should usher in another year of playoffs for the Giants.

2009 New York Giants Free Agency And TradesThe 2009 New York Giants Free Agency and Trades have led to a lot of changes for the upcoming season.Perhaps the most significant change in the Giants line up is not their additions, but rather their losses. Plaxico Burress, star wide receiver, was released in early April, after several suspensions and a slew of legal troubles. Amani Toomer was another widereceiver the Giants lost, leaving their offensive somewhat lacking. Toomer returned to Free Agent status, leaving the giants down yet another receiver. The safeties James butler and Sammy Knight were both released as well, the former to the Seahawks and the latter to the Free Agent pool. Derrick Ward, runningback, was sent to Tampa Bay, giving the Bucs a strong edge on their offensive lines.

2009 New York Giants NFL DraftThe 2009 New York Giants NFL Draft put them a step above the rest, as they had received several additional picks due to trades. The Giants received the 29th pick in the first round, and they took Hakeem Nicks, a wide receiver from North Carolina, to help make up for their losses this year. Clint Sintim was brought aboard as the 13th pick in the second round, as the 45th pick overall, to play as an outside line backer. The second round didn't end there, giving them the 28th second round pick to grab William Beatty to place as an offensive tackle. Round 3 brought in an additional wide receiver by the name of Ramses Barden. The 6'6", 229 pound receiver is an ideal candidate to make up for the loss of Plaxico. As round 3 continued, the 100th overall pick was Travis Beckum. While the Giants didn't need a tight end, they should find a position for such a talented athlete amongst their ranks. Andre Brown was the fourth round pick for the Giants, granting them an additional runningback to make up for the loss of Derrick Ward. Rhett Bomar, a back up quarterback, was brought aboard during the fifth round. The sixth round entailed DeAndre Wright, a defensive back from New Mexico. Their final choice was also a defensive back, Stoney Woodson, who is meant to be a swift addition who may be able to fulfill a variety of roles.

2009 New York Giants Quarterbackseli manning new york giants quarterbackEli Manning will continue to throw bombs at the receivers for the Giants, though he will be missing one of his favorite targets in Plaxico Burress. Eli brought the team to victory during the 2007 Super Bowl, defeating the New England Patriots. Manning was one of the sole forces, besides a punishing ground attack which led them through the 2008 regular season. They lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional playoffs, knocking them out of the running for the Super Bowl. Despite having been released, David Carr was resigned to play as a back up QB in the '09 season. Carr, a former number one pick, by the Houston Texans, is looking to get his career to resemble something worthy of that high choice. Rhett Bomar was drafted this year to also serve as a back up quaterback and perhaps a replacement for Eli Manning when Manning decides to retire. The young Andre Woodson also sits on the sides as one of the 2009 New York Giants Quarterbacks, keeping his one year experience behind him waiting for a moment to shine.

2009 New York Giants Running BacksAndre Brown, who was signed this year as a new face to attempt to make up for the loss of Derrick Ward, earned a spot as one of the 2009 New York Giants Running Backs . Ward went to Tampa Bay and took with him his 1,750 lifetime running yards. This blow to the offensive line of the Giants will prove to augment Tampa Bay, but Big Blue will have to step up to make up for the loss. Brandon Jacobs, the largest running back the Giants have, has pushed 2,620 yards in his career. The short game is essential for the giants, so their running backs will have to be at their best to make up for the recent losses.

2009 New York Giants Wide Receivers Another great loss for the Giants is their receivers. Plaxico Burress was their leading receiver, but due to legal issues he was released from the team. Hakeem Nicks was drafted as a 2009 New York Giants Wide Receiver in hopes of replacing Burress, but only time will tell if this works out as well. Ramses Barden was also brought up, and his above average height (6'6") should make him a great target for Eli's deep passes. Dominek Hixon should also continue to be a prime target for Eli, as well as the newly acquired tight end Travis Beckum as the team unfolds and readjusts to the changes.

2009 New York Giants Offensive LineThe 2009 New York Giants Offensive Line is looking good for yet another year. The Giants offensive line is being led by Pat Flaherty, and he has some top quality players to contend with in the field. Kareem McKenzie is running into his 9th season, and his performance has been consistent throughout the years and remains one of their strongest tackles. Coupled with David Diehl, the line is secured and allows their runners to break through and keeps defensive opposition from keeping the Giants from scoring. Shaun O'Hara and Manning have an excellent relationship as teammates, allowing the two to boost the Giants offensive capabilities. The Center is always an essential position, but O'Hara excels particularly well at his job.

2009 New York Giants Defensive Linejustin tuck new york giants defensive tackleThe 2009 New York Giants Defensive Line have a slew of members who, majoritarily, have more than three years experience. Justin Tuck will continue to be a dominant force on the already abusive defensive line, bringing his 173 tackles and 23 sacks, career wide, to the Giants for an additional year. Another huge key for the Giants D-Line will be the return of Osi Umenyiora. After missing the entire previous season due to an injury, Umenyiora looks to return to his dominant form which led the Giants to the 2007 NFL Championship. The Giants defensive line has a proclivity toward applying pressure, and they will continue to perpetrate a decisive game turning ability.

2009 New York Giants LinebackersThe Eagles have typically had to cycle through year long stays by linebackers, but they have Danny Clark and Fred Robbins bring a decades worth of experience to the 2009 New York Giants Linebackers line up. Antonio Pierce brings to the table 9 years of experience, not to mention 238 pounds of power to the line, and five year vets Michael Boley and Chase Blackburn return to the line to deal some damage to their enemies. The Giants have brought aboard three new rookies to the set of line backers, so the five to ten year veterans should aid in instructing the newbies on how to improve their game and help the giants to the best of their abilities.

2009 New York Giants SecondaryThe 2009 New York Giants Secondary defenses will be handled by a powerful group. Corey Webster and Aaron Ross will be the starting corners for the Giants. Webster, provided he continues to advance as he does, could become one of the strongest Corners in the league. Kenny Phillips will return for the second year, playing safety along with the ever-diverse and developing Michael Johnson.
