philadelphia eagles logoWelcome to your direct connection to the 2009 Philadelphia Eagles Season Preview. Eagles fans, one of the most hard core fan bases in the NFL, are looking at a productive season for the 2009 Philadelphia Eagles. Andy Reid will once again lead the Eagles to victory or downfall, just as he has since 1999. Five of his years of tenure Reid has brought the Eagles to championship games, including the '04 Super Bowl. Reid has set the standard for Eagles coaches, holding records for the highest win total, best win percentage, and overall playoff wins in the history of the team. Jim Johnson, the defensive coordinator, has been a powerful force for the Eagles, but his continued work is nothing but tentative at this point. He has been battling cancer and has put in a leave of absence since May of '09. He has created a reputation for subterfuge and intricate blitzes, and is a great addition to the Eagles coaching staff. Offensive Coordinator Marty Mornhinweg will be returning for another season, bringing with him his experience as a head coach as well as an undeniable ability to call plays with the best of them. In the '06 season, Mornhinweg led the Eagles offense toward six straight wins, three of which were games where the Eagles played as visitors. Doug Pederson is making his first year debut as the Eagles offensive quality control coach. Pederson is a former quarterback for the Eagles, and had been spending his days as the head coach and an athletic director at Cavalry Baptist Academy in Louisiana. James Urban will be entering his first year as the quarterback's coach for the Eagles. Urban is another player turned coach, as he was a wide receiver in a Virginian University. Brian Stewart is another addition to the coaching staff, and he will be fulfilling the roll of special assistant to defense.

2009 Philadelphia Eagles Free Agency And TradesThe 2009 Philadelphia Eagles Free Agency and Trades resulted in Ellis Hobbs being brought in from New England to replace the loss of Lito Sheppard to the Jets. Hobbs is a record breaker - in '07 he set the record for the longest kickoff return in NFL history, a 108 yard reception. Hobbs, as of '08, has almost 200 tackles to his name, and his continued presences as a defensive juggernaut is expected to continue into the Philadelphia Eagles 2009 schedule. Sean Jones was picked up from Cleveland to play Safety for the Eagles. His contract will last a year and will fulfil this contract as an unrestricted free agent. Over the past four years, he has accrued over 280 tackles, took part in 60 games, but has suffered a couple of injuries. Jason Peters, the offensive tackle from the Buffalo Bills, comes in to replace Tra Thomas, who the Eagles lost to Jacksonville. Stacy Andrews from the Bengals, another offensive lineman, was picked up. Final addition, Leonard Weaver, came from Seattle to fill the Fullback position. The biggest loss the Eagles took was Brian Dawkins. Dawkins left to join the Broncos.

2009 Philadelphia Eagles NFL DraftThe Eagles sought to improve both their offensive and defensive lines through strategic thinking during the 2009 Philadelphia Eagles NFL Draft. The Eagles had the 19th choice in the first round, which was used to absorb Jeremy Maclin. The second round gave them the 21st pick, which was the 53rd overall. Their choice was the running back from Pittsburgh, LeSean McCoy. The third and fourth picks were bounced around so many times that it is nigh impossible to actually find where they ended up through the rabbit hole. The 17th fifth round pick, the 153rd total, picked up Cornelius Ingram, the 6'4", 245 pound tight end from Florida, added as a tight end to bolster the offensive line. The Eagles had two other fifth round picks, the second of which was the 21st, which grabbed up Victor Harris from Virginia Tech to play as corner back. The Final fifth round pick signed Fenuki Tupou to the eagles as an offensive tackle. Brandon Gibson came in the 6th round, as the 194th overall pick from the draft pool. Paul Fanaika came next, as the fourth pick of the seventh round, as the 213th overall pick. The final choice the Eagles made in the 2009 NFL draft was Moise Fokou. Out of all the drafts made by the Eagles, there were only two defensive players and Linebacker Fokou was one of them.

2009 Philadelphia Eagles Quarterbacksdonovan mcnabb philadelphia eagles quarterbackDonovan McNabb will continue his tenure with the Eagles after his return in 2008. Last year he blew away all other quarterbacks in the first week of play by throwing for just over 360 yards. McNabb had been the target for criticism throughout the season, however, which culminated in their defeat to the Cardinals. McNabb will be at the head of the 2009 Philadelphia Eagles Quarterbacks going into the season, but in addition to his experience the Eagles will be receiving passes and pitches from third year pro Kevin Kolb. Kolb is, as of '09, presumed to take McNabb's place upon retirement or relief. Nine year Quarterback vet A.J. Feeley will add to the string. Feeley is signed with the Eagles through 2010, so expect to see him periodically when the former two are at rest.

2009 Philadelphia Eagles Running Backsbrian westbrook philadelphia eagles running backAfter the injury sustained by Brian Westbrook, the Eagles realized they needed to augment their runningback line up. Now that Correll Buckhalter is gone, in order to compensate for the potentially career ending injury dealt to Westbrook, LeSean McCoy was picked up in the second round draft and will join as one of the 2009 Philadelphia Eagles Running Backs. It is thought that the Eagles will preserve Westbrook by employing him more on the long game, rather than have him plunge into the fray by running the ball. McCoy shows a promising ability to break through the line and gain yards in the short game. Leonard Weaver was also picked up to fill in gaps created by the damaged Westbrook, while still maintaining Brian's versatility and talents when applicable. Coach Reid has, some will argue, made a sound choice in keeping his players in good health.

2009 Philadelphia Eagles Wide Receivers

2009 Philadelphia Eagles Offensive LineThe acquisition of Jason Peters brings a new level of play for the 2009 Philadelphia Eagles Offensive Line. Creating gaps for the point scorers to break through is the general goal here, and loss of Tra Thomas and Jon Runyan reduced the effectiveness here. Peters is a Pro Bowl vet, so his skill and expertise should pick up where the former two left off. Stacy Andrews was another addition, who will now be playing along with his brother Shawn Andrews. The changes will prompt the Eagles to have to adjust and retune the way they handle some situations, but all in all it should work out for the best.

2009 Philadelphia Eagles Defensive Line

Bodog Sportsbook For NFL Betting

Brodrick Bunkley and Mike Patterson are making their return to the 2009 Philadelphia Eagles Defensive Line, and the synergistic effect of these two heavy hitters will create a difficult task for opposition to break through and score. The Eagles set the aforementioned couple in the middle, while Trent Cole and Juqua Parker are placed according to the assumed play their opponents will make. The Eagles had no significant changes made to their defensive line since the '08 season, so expect a repeat performance of incredible stoppage from the Eagles.

2009 Philadelphia Eagles LinebackersThe Eagles have typically had to cycle through year long stays by linebackers, but they have finally found a group to stick with and these 2009 Philadelphia Eagles Linebackers are something to watch. Stewart Bradley is the foundation, with Chris Gocong and Omar Gaither at his sides. This trifecta of linemen have become a staple for the Eagles. They have given the Eagles one of the best chances of divisional success. Turnovers are their speciality, and the opportunities are massive. Coverage supplied by these three should create for a devastating sweep.

2009 Philadelphia Eagles Secondary

2009 Philadelphia Eagles Special Teams David Akers may be pulled from the 2009 Philadelphia Eagles Special Teams following a botched field goal and extra point attempt in the NFC championship in the '08 season. The change would be an important one that could lead to field goal wins or game breaking failed attempts. Hobbs or Maclin may take over the kick return task, assuming Jackson or Demps aren't the men for the job.
