NFL News - October 13th, 2009 - Written by Scott
The Philadelphia Eagles will look to improve to 4-1 on the year as they travel to play the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. Oakland (1-4) is off to a dreadful start and just can not find a way to get anything going on both sides of the ball. They are coming off a sound 44-7 beating suffered against the New York Giants. The Eagles welcomed the return of starting quarterback Donovan McNabb in Week 5 as they defeated Tampa Bay 33-14.
The Philadelphia Eagles have been hitting on all cylinders offensively. They are averaging 31 points and 368 total yards per game. McNabb, in his first game back after suffering a broken rib, came in where he left off and threw for 264 yards and 3 touchdowns. Running backs LeSean McCoy and Brian Westbrook lead a rushing attack that ranks 14th in the league. They have a combined total of 269 yards and 2 touchdowns. Their 7th ranked passing offense is led by the receiving trio of Brent Celek, DeSean Jackson, and Jeremy Maclin who have combined for 750 yards and 6 touchdowns. Unless the unexpected occurs, Philadelphia should have a great offensive showing against an Oakland defense that has struggled all season to stop anyone.
The Eagles defense, despite giving up 21 points per game, should not be challenged by the Raiders lack of production on offense they have shown all season. They are only giving up 272 yards per game and have the 4th ranked passing defense. They have also intercepted 9 passes and recovered 5 fumbles this year.
The Oakland Raiders just has not found any rhythm on offense this year and have only scored 4 touchdowns in five games. They are ranked last in the league in both total yards (191) and passing yards (108) per game. In addition, they are second to last in points scored and are averaging only 9 points per game. Quarterback JaMarcus Russell has only passed for 606 yards and 1 touchdown and has thrown 4 interceptions this year. Their rushing attack has been non-existent as well and the Raiders are only averaging 83 yards on the ground per game. Running backs Darren McFadden and Michael Bush have combined for a dismal 303 yards and 3 touchdowns. Zach Miller is their leading receiver with 215 yards and their only receiving touchdown was caught by Louis Murphy.
Defensively for the Raiders, things just do not get any better. They are giving up 382 yards and 26 points per game. They have had a miserable time in stopping the run this season and are giving up 161 yards on the ground. However, they have played well against the pass and rank 15th in passing defense.
Looking at NFL Week 6 Betting Odds, the Eagles come into this game as 14 point favorites, on the road against Oakland.
According to Bodog Sportsbook, the over/under on total points is currently set at 40 points.
