NFL News - August 17th, 2009 - Written by Bruce
The New York Jets failed to make the playoffs last year after losing four of their last five games. A 9-7 record was not good enough, as the team's collapse down the stretch led to the hiring of former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan as the Jets' new head coach. The New York Jets made big news this off season, when they moved up to the fifth pick in the 2009 NFL Draft to select quarterback Mark Sanchez. The Jets are the hoping that Sanchez will be their starting quarterback for many years to come. There is a good chance that Sanchez will see the majority of the snaps as a rookie this season. He will need to step in and immediately play well if this team is going to have a chance to make the playoffs this year. The 2010 Super Bowl Odds have the Jets listed at 40:1 to win it all this season. Be sure to visit Bodog, to check out all of the betting lines on next year's Super Bowl.
The 2009 New York Jets are hoping to put last season's disappointing finish behind them. They were sitting at 8-3 looking like a lock to make the playoffs, before stumbling down the stretch. This team has some talent on offense, but it how much success they have this year will depend largely on how much production they get at quarterback. Most experts feel that Mark Sanchez is going to have success in the NFL, but how he will fare as a rookie is another question entirely. Sanchez will hope to follow in the steps of both Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco last year, who both led their team's to the playoffs as rookies. Thomas Jones led the AFC in rushing last year with 1,312 yards. With the explosive Leon Washington and rookie RB Shonn Greene, with 2009 New York Jets should have a very solid running game. With the loss of WR Laveranues Coles this off season, both Jerricho Cotchery and Chansi Stuckey will need to step up and have big seasons for the Jets this year. The Jets will lean mainly on their running game in 2009, but they will need rookie Mark Sanchez to play well if they are going to be successful this season.
Defensively, the Jets were solid in most areas last season. They ranked seventh in the NFL in both rushing yards allowed (94.9) and sacks (41). With Rex Ryan coming over from Baltimore this year, the 2009 New York Jets defense should be much improved. The Jets will need to improve against the pass this year, as they gave up a dismal 234.5 yards per game in the air last season. With the addition of Lito Sheppard and Jim Leonhard this off season, the Jets should be better against the pass. Former Ravens linebacker Bart Scott came over with Ryan this off season, and he should become an immediate leader for them on defense. The Jets have the pieces in place to be effective defensively this year. With many new faces joining the team this season, the Jets are hoping to prove they are much better than the 40:1 odds they are listed at to win the Super Bowl this year. There were some key defensive players added this off season, but all eyes will be on Mark Sanchez to see if the rookie can lead the New York Jets to the 2009 NFL Playoffs.
