NFL News - August 7th, 2009 - Written by Bruce
The San Francisco 49ers drafted Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree, with the intentions of improving their record, and offense. After long negotiation talks over the pass three weeks, the 49ers and Michael Crabtree have not come to terms on the amount and length of his NFL contract. Michael Crabtree is seeking one of the highest paid contracts in this years draft class, and the 49ers just don't want to give him the money.
Michael Crabtree and his camp have decided to hold out as long as possible, so they can receive the exact contract they want. Crabtree has even reported to be willing to sit out the entire 2009 season. Sitting out the entire season will enable Crabtree the ability to re-enter the draft next season, with the chance to join an even better team.
Crabtree has no significant injuries, and injuries are often a common reason why NFL players hold out on signing new contracts. ESPN reports David Wells, who is Michael Crabtree's brother and current advisor, had this to say to the sports media "Michael just wants fair market value. They took him with the 10th pick and you have Darrius Haywood getting $38 million? This week is crucial. Michael was one of the best players in the draft and he just wants to be paid like one of the best players. This week is very crucial."
Crabtree will likely slip past the tenth selection in next years draft, if he decides to not play this season. Look for Crabtree to hold out as long as possible, but still play this season. The loss of a full season of football will not allow scouts to evaluate Crabtree in live game action. Crabtree is one of the most talented athletes coming into the NFL this year, and fantasy football owners are ready to see him perform on the field this season
