NFL News - August 5th, 2009 - Written by Ryan Smith
ESPN news, as well as the Associated Press, have reported that the New York Giants and quarterback Eli Manning have allegedly come to terms on a six year contract extension. The Contract Extension that is reportedly worth $97 million over 6 years, will make Eli Manning one of the highest paid NFL football players. Eli will make an annual salary of just over $15 million, earning almost a million dollars a game.
The Giants have lost some momentum, and team chemistry ever since the Plaxico Burress situation. This signing of Eli Manning for the next 7 years ensures Giants fans that the New York Giants football team is still competing for another Super Bowl victory. Eli Manning, who would have become a free agent at the end of this season is set to make over $9 million this year. Eli Manning took over as starting quarterback 8 games into his rookie season, and has made it to the playoffs in the last four consecutive years.
One of those trips to the playoffs ended with a Super Bowl Victory against the undefeated New England Patriots in 2007. Eli manning was awarded the MVP in that Super Bowl, a strong reason why he is due to make over $15 million a year. In fact, Eli Manning will now make more money annually then his celebrity status older brother, Peyton Manning. Peyton is listed to make $14.7 million annually on the remainder of his contract.
Eli Manning has started an astonishing 71 consecutive starts for the New York Giants since his rookie season. He earned his first trip to the Pro Bowl last season, passing for over 3,000 yards and 21 touchdowns. Eli also only threw 10 interceptions last season, and in the 2007 season he threw 20 interceptions. Eli Manning is also the only quarterback in New York Giants history to pass for over 20 touchdowns and 3,000 plus yards in 4 consecutive seasons. Eli has already verbally announced in the past that he has no intentions on leaving the Giants organization. Signing this 6 year $90 million contract attest to that statement.
