NFL News - August 24th, 2009 - Written by Glen
Citizens being injured by police due to different items being mistaken as weapons is not entirely unheard of, and thankfully this is not what occurred when police accosted Tony Fein, the rookie linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens.
Fein was arrested on Sunday at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, due to what his agent is calling police profiling. He was charged with assaulting an officer who had approached him after a member of the security team claimed to have seen Fein pass a handgun to a friend. The gun, as it turns out, was actually a cellular phone.
Fein had allegedly become truculent after police began to question him. It was reported that Fein knocked the officer, Sergeant Joseph Donato, to the ground, injuring the officer's arm. Fein's representative claimed that it was the officer who had become aggressive, and that Fein was approached for being a young African American male wearing a a hooded sweat suit.
Tony Fein will have to present his case, as he is required to be sent through due process. He was booked and charged with a misdemeanor on Sunday, but managed to return to the team's hotel early Monday morning. According to the police report, Donato told Fein to turn around from the counter, at which time Fein allegedly assaulted the officer.
The rookie Fein, 27, had served for three and a half years in the army, one year of which was spent in Iraq. His duty to his nation, as well as his sportsmanship in college, should serve as a character witness to the young man's testimony. He was decorated with the Pat Tillman Patriot Award for his service in Iraq. He was accredited six touchdowns and eight hundred passing yards in his senior year of high school. In two seasons at the University of Mississippi, Fein totaled 136 tackles.
