NFL News - August 26th, 2009 - Written by Glen
Regardless of his rookie mistakes, Sanchez was named the starting quarterback for the New York Jets. After a tumultuous game against the Baltimore Ravens, the future of New York's quarterback position was still up in the air. While Sanchez may not have had a perfect game, he still performed well enough to knock Clemens out of the race. Expect to see Sanchez on the line through out the regular season.
ESPN was informed about the decision on Wednesday, and you will probably be seeing Sanchez go toe-to-toe with the Giants on Saturday night. His adversary will be the highest paid NFL player, as well as one of the most esteemed quarterbacks, so expect a tough time for the Jets, both on offense and defense.
Sanchez was the fifth overall pick in the 2009 draft, while his competition, Kellen Clemens, has four years of experience. Experience, it seems, will not make up for raw talent, and Clemens will not be starting for his team. Sanchez has played in two games so far, one of which he started. Both games were a loss, though Sanchez did perform well enough to win the position as starting Quarterback.
In game one of the preseason, Sanchez threw 4 passes, 3 of which were received. Eighty-eight yards were gained, with an average of twenty-two yards per pass. The Jets-Baltimore game went slightly sour for the rookie, as he threw an interception, which scored the Ravens a touchdown, and he missed five out of eight passes. He only threw for forty-three yards that day.
Clemens, on the other hand, threw four and made four completions on the first game of the preseason. He went five for ten on the Baltimore game, and he too threw an interception. More of Clemens' passes were received than Sanchez, though frankly you cannot blame solely the quarterback for a missed catch.
Sanchez has room for improvement, and his career on the field should grow. As a starting quarterback, the expectations for the young rookie are high, and he will have to live up to them - or face the bench. With the regular season right around the corner, Sanchez will have to squeeze out as many of his mistakes as possible, though a run to the playoffs may be in the Jets' sight.
