NFL News - August 27th, 2009 - Written by Jimmy
Tonight when the Philadelphia Eagles host the Jacksonville Jaguars, Michael Vick is slated to make his much anticipated return to the NFL. Getting back to this point hasn't been easy for Vick. Two years ago, Vick was convicted of running organized crime in the form of a dog fighting ring. Vick served 23 months in federal custody, spending most of his time at Leavenworth Correctional Facility.
Since released, Vick has made strides to gain some sort of forgiveness from the American public, however much of what Vick does is still under scrutiny. Commissioner Roger Goodell conditionally re-instated Vick, after Vick's release from prison, with a full reinstatement expected to come before Week 6 of the regular season. Even with that, the Philadelphia Eagles stuck their neck out for Vick, signing him to a 1 year deal with a club option for 2010.
With all the heat the Eagles have drawn, this move had better work out. Vick looks to get his first action, with his new team, as the Eagles prepare for the upcoming 2009 NFL season. Tonight will be the first time Vick has appeared in an NFL game since December 31st, 2006, a game in which the Atlanta Falcons lost to Vick's current team, the Eagles, by a score of 17 to 24.
Today, Vick is set to appear in a federal bankruptcy court in Newport News, VA. The timing of his trial combined with the start time of 7:00pm EST could make it very tight on Vick. The Eagles have arranged everything so that Vick can appear in court yet still make it back in time to make his debut. For the Eagles, as with most teams, this third game of the preseason is crucial to getting ready for Week 1. Week 3 of the preseason is where starters get most of their playing time in what is equivalent to a dress rehearsal for the NFL regular season.
So far this preseason, the Eagles are 0-2, as are the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Eagles' 2009 NFL preseason schedule has consisted of some of the best teams in the NFL including the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts. Likewise, Jacksonville has faced in state rivals Miami, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. These two teams should be pretty evenly matched, with the slight edge going to Philadelphia. This should be a great game to watch as both teams look to crack some heads in preparation for Week 1 of the NFL regular season.
As America watches with bated breath, USAPlayers.com will be covering the story. Be sure to check back tomorrow for a full recap of Vick's performance as well as the rest of the Philadelphia Eagles vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars.
