Denver Bronco's head coach Josh McDaniels finally got to face his former boss, Bill Belichick, on Sunday. McDaniels and his Broncos used a fourth quarter rally engineered by quarterback Kyle Orton and beat the New England Patriots 20-17 in overtime. Losing his former assistants is proving to be costly for Bilichick as he is now 8-7 against his old pupils. Denver is off to a surprising start and is now 5-0. The loss drops New England to 3-2 on the year. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who finished with 215 yards passing and 2 touchdowns, was held to only 63 yards in the second half and spoke highly of his former coach.
"Josh is a great coach, so he's obviously learned a lot and he's got the team playing well," Brady said. "Pretty impressive for a first-year coach. He's a hard worker and he certainly deserves it. They're playing well."
The Patriots opened up a ten point lead in the first quarter with a 8 yard touchdown pass from Brady to Wes Welker and a 53 yard field goal by Stephen Gostkowski. The Denver Broncos would respond with 4:31 remaining in the half on a 11 yard touchdown pass from Orton to Brandon Marshall, his 1st of two touchdown receptions in the game. With 5 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Brady connected with Benjamin Watson on a 7 yard touchdown pass to give the Patriots a 17-7 lead heading into halftime. Denver place kicker Matt Prater hit a 24 yard field goal in the third quarter to cut the Patriots' lead to seven.
With Denver trailing by seven with 9:59 left to go in the game, Orton, who passed for 330 yards and 2 touchdowns, would begin his magic. On a drive that began on their own 2 yard line, Orton patiently moved his team down the field on short completions that would get the Broncos down to the Patriots 11 yard line. He found Marshall again and connected on a 11 yard touchdown pass to tie the game. After both teams having one more possession and a chance to win the game, neither would get on the scoreboard and the game went into overtime. The Broncos completely shut down New England's offense in the second half and held Brady to just 63 yards.
The Broncos won the coin toss and used a 58 yard drive to set up Prater's game winning 41 yard field goal to give Denver the win. The Broncos now have four come from behind wins in their five games this season.
New England will host Tennessee on Sunday and Denver will travel to San Diego on Monday night.
