Terrific Tom Terrific Again With 6 TDs Against Winless Tennessee

NFL News - October 19th, 2009 - Written by Scott

tom bradyAfter posting the best record in the NFL a year ago, the Tennessee Titans are now 0-6 after an embarrassing loss on Sunday to the New England Patriots. Tom Brady threw 6 touchdown passes, five in the second quarter, as the Patriots routed the Titans 59-0. Their win ties them for the sixth largest win in NFL history and improves their record to 4-2. Their 45-0 lead heading into halftime is the largest in the history of the NFL. Not only was their offense clicking, their defense held the Titans to just 186 total yards and an unbelievable -7 yards passing.

"I'm disappointed and embarrassed," Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher said. "Fortunately for me, career-wise, I have never been through anything like this before and, unfortunately, it happened tonight. I can assure you one thing, it's not going to happen again."

The rout began with 5:51 remaining in the first quarter as Laurence Maroney (123 yards and 1 touchdown) got the Patriots first touchdown on a 45 yard run. With :47 remaining in the opening period, Stephen Gostkowski added a 33 yard field goal to give the New England a 10-0 lead after the first quarter.

The firework show would then begin with 9:56 left to go in the second when Randy Moss caught his first of two touchdown passes from 40 yards out. Just 57 seconds later, he would catch his second on a 28 yard pass from Brady to give the Patriots a 24-0 lead. Kevin Faulk would then add to the lead with a 38 yard touchdown pass. Wes Welker would then get his 2 touchdown catches in a 1:41 time frame to give the New England a 45-0 lead. In a 17-play stretch in the second quarter, Tennessee would lose 2 fumbles, give up 3 touchdown passes, and throw an interception.

Brady would come in for just the first series of the second half and found Moss for his third touchdown catch of the game. Rookie quarterback Brian Hoyer would then replace Brady and the Titans could not stop him either. On his opening drive, he scored on a 1 yard run and finished with 52 yards passing. Titans linebacker Keith Bulluck could not believe what had just occurred in their 59-0 loss.

"I've been playing sports since I was 8," Bullock said, "and never have I experienced something like that."

Tennessee did have one bright spot in the game and that was the play of Chris Johnson who rushed for 128 yards. Quarterback Kerry Collins was miserable throughout the game and was just 2 of 12 for -7 yards passing with one interception. Despite the lack of offensive production by the Titans, the five turnovers they committed all led to scores by the Patriots.

Tennessee will have a week off before they try and get their first win of the season against Jacksonville in Week 8. New England will play at Tampa Bay on Sunday.
