Poker News - July 8, 2009 - Written by Bruce
Day 2B of the Main Event is set to take place today with a field of nearly 3,000 players. The field will comprise all of the players who survived Day 1C and Day 1D. Following today's action there will be a one day break for the players, then for the first time this year all the remaining players will play in one field when Day 3 takes place on Friday. Today's play will feature the likely 2009 WSOP Player of the Year as Jeffrey Lisandro is among the chip leaders. He finished Day 1C with a huge stack of 145,000 chips.
Lisandro already has three bracelets this year is looking to position himself for deep run in this event with a solid day today. The biggest name in poker today will also be a part of today's field as Phil Helmuth also survived Day 1C. He is on a much shorter stack than Lisandro though as he starts Day 2B with only 25,000 chips. Helmuth is the record holder with 11 World Series of Poker bracelets and is famous for his childish outbursts at the table. He will need a big day today if he is going to get back in contention. Of the 1696 players making up the Day 1C field 1106 of them survived and will play in today's Day 2B field.
Day 1D featured a huge field of 2,809 players with about 1,900 surviving to play in today's Day 2B field. Some of the world's top players were in this group and are all coming into today with above average chip stacks. Prahlad Friedman, Bertrand "Elky" Grospellier, J.C. Tran, David Benyamine, Kirk Morrison, and the most feared man in poker Phil Ivey all will enter today with above average chip stacks. The 2008 Main Event winner Peter Eastgate also survived Day 1D and will look to position himself for another deep run with a good showing today. The overall chip leader after all of the Day 1s were played, Troy Weber, will enter today's Day 2B field with a massive 353,000 chips. With so many talented players having healthy stacks this will be an action filled day of poker. Will any of these top pros have a big day today and move near the chip lead? Play kicks off at noon Vegas time and all the players remaining at day's end will be a part of Friday's Day 3 field.
The final numbers have been announced with a total of 6,494 players making up this years Main Event field. The top 648 finishers will all finish in the money and amazingly the final nine players will all make at least $1.2 million for their final table performance. The winner of this year's Main Event will take home a ridiculous $8,546,435. With this amount of money on the line, today's Day 2B action will be furious as the players position themselves hoping to ultimately be the 2009 WSOP Main Event champion.
