Poker News - July 7, 2009 - Written by Bonnie
Day 1D of the 2009 World Series of Poker was not off to a good start for hundreds of poker players. Hoping to win a spot into the main event proved to be not such a good idea for those whos plans fell short. Hundreds of aggravated players stood behind the rails as the announcement came through that Day 1D had reached its maximum capacity of 2809 and had been declared a sell out. Among those players were several well established names, who demanded that special arrangements be made for their accommodations despite the fact that the room was completely full. With so many competitors for the Main Event this year, Day 1 was splint into 4 parts with a mamimum amount of players registered each day. When this situation arose, 20 Harrah's and WSOP officials conducted a formal meeting to see if any arrangements could be made for those players still wishing to enter the main event. After serious consideration, the officials decided there was just no way to accommodate so many late comers. Whether you are a professional poker player or playing just for the fun of it, registration was available to the public on first come first serve basis and those who waited until the last minute were simply out of luck.
Despite all the confusion and disappointment on Day 1D, after 96 hours and 6494 players, Day one of the Main Event has come to an end. With nearly $60,000,000 in prize money including a first place prize of $8,548,435, players were definitely in for a long exhausting Main Event tournament. Among the 2809 playing in Day 1D, we saw many familiar faces such as Dario Minieri, Anton Alleman, and last years runner-up for the main event Ivan Demidov, all who will not be seeing the likes of Day 2 of the 2009 WSOP Main Event.
The day seemed to be a little brighter for PokerStars Pros Chad Brown and Elky who finish the day with chip counts of 90,000 and 70,000. Also having a good enough day of play to advance to day 2 is poker players Peter Easgate, Jordan Farmer, Lou Diamond Phillips, Marlon Wayans, Jc Avardo and Veronica Dabul , who managed to stay alive with as little as 9000 chips.
Day 2 will also play out somewhat like day 1. Tune in for your updates as Day 2A gets underway.
