Poker News - June 30, 2009 - Written by Bonnie
Carsten Joh was named champion of event 51 of the 2009 WSOP , after outlasting over 2780 players who attended the No Limit Hold Em' tournament. This $1500 buy in event lasted three grueling days and brought out some of the great names in poker such as Steven Levy, David Walasinki, Thibaut Durand and Owen Crowe, just to name a few. Joh has racked up over $300,000 in career wins through his Europe tournaments, but certainly made his North American win one to be remembered. His efforts in this tournament granted him a payday of $664,426 and his first WSOP bracelet. Although he was left the last man standing, it was no easy journey to the end.
Joh earned his spot at the final table, taking his seat 7th in chip count, which made him one of only three players to start the final stages of the tournament under million chips. With Jason Helder, who started the final table as chip leader, leaving in 8th, this tournament win is up for grabs to any of the remaining players. Joh managed to stay out of the spot light a majority of the day, hoping that his control and patience would pay off and keep him in the running for the gold bracelet. After Steven Levy was sent packing in 4th posistion, if left a three handed match up and Joh one step closer to his first WSOP win.
It was Carsten Joh who was responsible for eliminating David Walasinski, placing Joh with a slight chip lead offer his head to head opponent Andrew Chen. That small chip lead quickly turned into a 5-1 chip advantage over Walasinski after he gained two large pots from Chen. The final hand would give Chen enough courage to run a bold move and go all in with 18 big blinds. Chen who was holding two suited cards and Joh who sat with pocket sixes, both hoped for the best as the final flop came. Unfortunate for Chen, the final river card revealed a six, ending this final match up with Carsten Joh as the new champion of event 51. Congratulations to Carsten Joh for his efforts in the No Limit Hold'em tournament.
