When the Williams' sisters took to Centre Court, from the All England Club, at the 2009 Wimbledon Championships, they knew that one would be victorious, and the other would be disappointed. Obviously there has to be a winner and a loser, and that is something these two sisters know all too well. Coming into the Championship match, the Williams' sisters had already met 20 times, in tournament play, including 7 matches in Finals matches at the Major tournaments.
In the first set, it appeared as though this match was going to be a good one, but things quickly changed. After Serena beat Venus, 7-6, the match was essentially over. The I's had to be dotted, and the T's crossed, to make it official, but it wouldn't take long, as Serena dominated the second set, 6-2, which earned Serena Williams her 3rd Wimbledon Women's Championship, and her first since 2003. For Serena, this is her 11th overall Major Championship title.
After the match, Serena was quoted as saying to ESPN "This is one of the few times I didn't expect to come out with the win today," Serena said. "When I won that first set, I was like, 'Wow, this is great. No matter what, I'm a set away.' So I was just trying to relax."
Then when addressing her status as the World's number 2 player, she was also quoted by ESPN as saying "I think if you hold three Grand Slam titles maybe you should be No. 1, but not on the WTA Tour obviously," Serena then goes on to state "My motivation is maybe just to win another Grand Slam and stay No. 2, I guess," she added with a laugh. "I'd rather definitely be No. 2 and hold three Grand Slams in the past year than be No. 1 and not have any."
Total time for the match was a short 1 hour and 27 minutes. For the other Williams sister, Venus, this marks the end of two consecutive Wimbledon Women's Championships.
