Serena Defeats Venus in Wimbledon Final

Sports Betting News - July 4, 2009 - Written by Bruce

serenaSerena and Venus Williams had to put aside their close relationship as sisters to compete against each other for the Wimbledon Women's Championship on Saturday. Serena defeated her older sister in straight sets 7-6 (3) and 6-2 to win her third Wimbledon title. The main difference in the two sister today was Serena out serving Venus. She used her dominant serve to win the first set tiebreaker and to take control in the second set. After saving three previous match points, the match came to an end when Venus hit a backhand into the net making Serena this years champion.

Today's title gives Serena her eleventh career Grand Slam Championship. This match was a role reversal from a year ago when Venus was the one to win the title, defeating Serena in the finals. Venus had won Wimbledon the previous two years and was trying to become the first woman to Wimbledon three straight years since Steffi Graf did this from 1991-1993.
The Williams sisters have been dominate at Wimbledon winning their eighth singles title this decade. Serena now has a 11-10 edge over Venus in career head to head match ups. Serena is however 6-2 against Venus in Grand Slam finals with her victory today.

The match statistics show how dominant Serena was today as she had ten more aces than her sister 12-2 and had 25 winners compared to only 14 for Venus. With today's victory Serena is one Grand Slam title away from tying Billie Jean King for sixth all time with 12. Even with today's loss sister Venus has five Wimbledon titles and seven overall Grand Slam titles. What these two sisters have been able to do is incredible and they yet again thoroughly dominated the field. Congratulations to both of them on a great performance and for Serena on becoming the 2009 Wimbledon women's champion.
