Sports Betting News - July 29th, 2009 - Written by Ryan Smith
Tomorrow, Thursday July 30, is the start of first round play at the 2009 Buick Open Championship, which will be the final time that GM lends a name brand to the sponsorship of this tournament. This years purse is guaranteed at 5 million dollars, and the winner will take home a clean $900,000 as well as a brand new Buick. Also, the winner of this event will receive 500 points towards the FedEx Cup Championship. Warwick Hills is still the site of the tournament, in 2009, and this might be the only reason why Tiger Woods even showed up to play the event, being that his sponsorship with Buick has ended. Tiger wins at Warwick Hills often and has long been one of Woods' favorite golf courses to play.
The first tee time is set at 7 am, with Tiger set to tee off at 12:54 pm, on the First Hole. Tiger will join the group of Jonathan Byrd and Todd Hamilton, as the take to the course, for first round play. Tiger Woods won the Buick Open just three years ago, in 2006, and his first Buick Open Championship, in 2002. Tiger Woods is sure to perform better than he did a few weeks ago, at the British Open, when he failed to make the second cut to advance, into weekend play. Last year, Kenny Perry won the event, but Tiger Woods is still the favorite to win again this year.
Jim Furyk who won the event, in 2003, is another heavy favorite to win the tournament this year. Warwick Hills is a favorite course for many PGA tour players because it allows them to score. The winner is likely to be double digits under par. Great scoring conditions are sure to make the Buick Open a more enjoyable tournament, to watch, compared to the the 2009 British Open, at windy Turnberry. All eyes are on Tiger Woods, and most expect him to lead the field, in this weekends event. Other notable PGA tour players, who are favored to win, are John Daly, who played well at the British Open, and new fan favorite Rocco Mediate, who is not a favorite with the sportsbooks, but locals say the course will favor Mediate's style of play.
