Last season was a breathe of fresh air and as far as the 2009 Atlanta Falcons Season Preview goes, you can sit back and watch a good quarterback may become great one. Matt Ryan had the took over command on the offensive side of the ball from day one. Then you can look at last years head coaching job by first year coach Mike Smith. You can say the team bought into whatever the coach was saying last year cause they were playing well and having fun. The offense is stacked in every skills position, now the defense has got some rebuilding to do after this offseason losing 5 veteran players. Last year we saw Michael Turner become a featured back in the NFL. Roddy White had a huge year last season and Michael Jenkins also agree that Matt Ryan pick. Now for the 2009 Atlanta Falcons Season they are bringing in future hall of famer tight end Tony Gonzalez. He wanted to get out of Kansas City and he is with a big smile on his face.

2009 Atlanta Falcons NFL DraftThe Falcons tried to address those defensive loses through the 2009 Falcons NFL Draft, they chose 7 defenders out of 8 picks. Defensive tackle Peria Jerry was their first selection, he is not the biggest guy but he is very strong. Next they fill a void in the secondary with the selection of William Moore who should be a physical strong safety. Hopefully he can stay healthy cause he had a problem with that in college. Cornerback was the next spot to fill and they did so with Christopher Owens who is a very fast cornerback that can get where he needs to be quick.
2009 Atlanta Falcons QuarterbacksMatt Ryan finally got all those Falcons fans someone to make everyone forget about Michael Vick. Matt Ryan could not have had a better pass than his first pass of his career, it was a 62-yard bomb to Michael Jenkins. Great things had to come from Ryan, A.K.A. Matty Ice, who came into the league making more money than the league's most prolific passers, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. Ryan has all the weapons around him if he can get some protection from his offensive line then this year should be another high octane offense. Now Matt Ryan has the ability to work with future Hall of Fame Tight End, Tony Gonzalez, who is making his way over from the Kansas City Chiefs. The back up spot for the 2009 Atlanta Falcons Quarterbacks is up in the air with Chris Redman and D.J. Shockley. Neither of these two have extensive experience as a starting QB, so should Ryan go down, so will the 2009 Atlanta Falcons Season.
2009 Atlanta Falcons Running BacksMichael Turner looked good last year with the starting job that he wanted to have, which he came over from the San Diego Chargers to get. Turner worked out so well with the offense he made the the passing game open up because defenses were stacking the line, worried about him running the ball. Turner's downhill running style led the Atlanta Falcons right into the NFL Playoffs. Should his performance stay up, he will become a favorite among Falcons fans, and fantasy football owners alike. The Atlanta Falcons added the wildcat formation to their play book to and they call it the "Dirty Bird." The Falcons bring back smaller back and speedster Jerious Norwood to the 2009 Atlanta Falcons Running Backs for his very quick feet and ability to slide through the smallest holes. Norwood also saw quite a few little dump off passes out the backfield to let him build up some speed before he gets the ball. Chances are that Norwood won't see the ball very much, down by the endzone, but that really shouldn't matter much, as he is capable of scoring from anywhere on the field.
2009 Atlanta Falcons Wide ReceiversThe receivers last year really stepped their game up, Roddy White set the Falcons record for yards from receptions in a single season. He has had two straight 1,000 yard seasons and made his first pro bowl last year. When Roddy was covered Matt Ryan found another guy he can depend on in Michael Jenkins. Harry Douglas rounds out the starting unit for the 2009 Atlanta Falcons Wide Receivers and he is known for his speed. They have a veteran coming off the bench to get some filler time, if Brian Finneran can come back from a down year. They would like to see Aaron Kelly step up after setting records at Clemson in college.
2009 Atlanta Falcons Offensive LineLast season the Falcons had one of the most improved lines in the league, but the funny thing was they had the same exact guy from two years ago when they were horrible. The big guys up front helped Atlanta to the 2nd highest ranking in rushing yards per game. They are losing Todd Weiner and Sam Baker from that line from last year. The 2009 Atlanta Falcons Offensive Line group leader is center Todd McClure, who let his offensive line only give up 17 sacks last year. The Falcons are impressed with their left guard Justin Blalock and are hoping he starts out where he left off last year. The right guard is Harvey Dahl and next to him is right tackle Tyson Clabo and together create big gaps for the running backs to run through. The left tackle job is still up in the air between Will Svitek and Quinn Ojinnaka.
2009 Atlanta Falcons Defensive LineThe Falcons lost one of their key guys in Grady Jackson to the Lions, so they use their first draft pick on tackle Peria Jerry to try to fill that void. They are hoping he can grasp the system quick and become a starter right away. The Falcons still have their dominate defensive end John Abraham who usually plays right end but does go to left end when needed. Abraham is still a force to be reckoned with coming off the edges, and opposing Offensive Tackles will need to be on their game, to pick him up. Opposite of Abraham will be Jamaal Anderson applying pressure from the other side. Defensive Tackle Jonathon Babineaux got a contract extension who must now prove his worth along the D-Line. Trey Lewis will also be along, in the trenches, plugging up the middle. Those four should be the starters for the 2009 Atlanta Falcons Defensive Line.
2009 Atlanta Falcons LinebackersThe Falcons have lost long time veteran defensive leaders Keith Brookings and Michael Boley, but they did bring in two guys to take their places as the 2009 Atlanta Falcons Linebackers. Mike Peterson played for coach Smith in Jacksonville and will be the weak side linebacker. Stephen Nicholas will be playing a new hybrid linebacker position. While second year player Curtis Lofton will hold down the fort in the middle.
2009 Atlanta Falcons SecondaryAfter two departures this past off season the leader of the 2009 Atlanta Falcons Secondary will be free safety Erik Coleman. He was second on the team for tackles last season, Coleman also likes to take the ball away from anyone. The nickel back position will be a fierce competition between Chevis Jackson and Von Hutchins. Rookie William Moore will have the strong safety job if he can show the coaches he is ready to play now. The left corner spot is still open but should be down two men Chris Owens and Brent Grimes.
