There is excitement surrounding the 2009 Baltimore Ravens Season Preview, with second year quarterback Joe Flacco coming off an amazing rookie campaign. They have most of their key players returning and are poised to be a threat yet again in the AFC North division. Head Coach John Harbaugh is returning for his second year with the team. He had a successful first year as Head Coach leading the team to two playoff victories and hopefully will bring the same lucky in the 2009 Baltimore Ravens Season. Jerry Rosburg is the Assistant Head Coach and Special Teams Coordinator. Cam Cameron will return for his second year as Offensive Coordinator. Greg Mattison replaces the departed Rex Ryan as Defensive Coordinator. Mattison was the Linebackers Coach a season ago and will have big shoes to fill as the Ravens have had one of the top defenses in the league for the past decade.

2009 Baltimore Ravens Free Agency And TradesJoining the team for the upcoming season through the 2009 Baltimore Ravens Free Agency and Trades is CB Dominique Foxworth from the Atlanta Falcons. He should add depth to an already potent secondary. Center Matt Birk was also signed coming over from the Minnesota Vikings. Birk started all 16 games a season ago for Minnesota. Chris Carr was signed coming from the Tennessee Titans and should add some explosiveness in the return game and also may see some time at cornerback. Tight End L.J. Smith was signed from the Philadelphia Eagles and should help out second year QB Joe Flacco in the passing game. QB Matt Beck was signed and should compete for a backup job coming over from the Miami Dolphins. The additions of Birk and L.J. Smith should help solidify the offense while Chris Carr will add big play capability in the return game.
2009 Baltimore Ravens NFL DraftThey had the 23rd pick during round one of the 2009 Baltimore Ravens NFL Draft, and selected Mississippi OT Michael Oher. Oher has an amazing story of personal triumphs overcoming adversity growing up but the Ravens selected him for his blocking prowess and hopes he will be a mainstay on their line for years to come. With their second round pick the Ravens chose DE Paul Kruger out of Utah at the 57th overall selection. Kruger is a raw talent who is a pass rush specialist and has the talent to become a productive player for Balimore in the future. In the third round Ladarius Webb is chosen with the 88th overall pick. He is a dynamic player with solid ball skills who should compete for playing time in the secondary and add another threat to the return game. TCU linebacker Jason Phillips is selected with the 137th pick of the fifth round. The Ravens are hoping Phillips can develop into a starting LB in a couple years from now. TE Davon Drew from East Carolina is selected with the 149th pick of the fifth round. He is an athletic tight end with good hands and ball skills. Virginia RB Cedric Peerman is selected with the Ravens 6th round pick as the 185th overall selection. Peerman is an excellent kick returner and is seen as a versatile player for Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron to work with.
2009 Baltimore Ravens QuarterbacksSecond year QB Joe Flacco became the first rookie QB in NFL history to lead his team to two playoff victories. In fact, Rookie Flacco almost led his team to the Super Bowl before losing in the final minutes, to the eventual NFL Champions in the AFC Championship game. Flacco showed great poise as a rookie and gave Baltimore hope that they have found their franchise quarterback. With 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions last year Flacco managed the team well and relied on the team's defense and running game to help win games, which is exactly what Baltimore needs in order to win. This year Flacco will be given more responsibility and will be expected to do more in the passing game going into his second season. Provided that avoids the dreaded sophomore jinx, Flacco should improve upon his numbers from 2008. For being one of the bigger 2009 Balitmore Ravens Quarterbacks, Flacco is very mobile and finished last year with 180 yards rushing. Former Ohio State QB Troy Smith is more than serviceable. After winning the Heisman Trophy, Troy Smith has been a backup with Baltimore, and knows the offense and personnel very well.
2009 Baltimore Ravens Running BacksComing off back to back 1000 yard seasons Derrick Mason remains a productive threat as the Ravens No.1 WR. Baltimore is hoping for a breakout season for their former first round draft pick Mark Clayton. He has not lived up to the first round pick the Ravens used on him, however there is hope in camp that Clayton will take steps this year and be the solid number two of the 2009 Baltimore ravens Running Backs. Todd Heap remains one of the better Tight Ends in the league and should have a solid season with QB Joe Flacco going into his second season under center.
2009 Baltimore Ravens Offensive LineSome draft experts stated that the Ravens first round draft pick Michael Oher chosen with the 23rd selection might have been the best pick in the draft. Oher will add depth to a 2009 Baltimore Ravens Offensive Line mixed with both youth and experience. Young guards Ben Grubbs and Marshal Yanda are expected to be starters to go along with veteran Willie Anderson and free agent center Matt Birk coming over from Minnesota
2009 Baltimore Ravens Defensive LineBaltimore is hoping to get a bit more from DE Trevor Pryce than did in 2008. He only recorded 4.5 sacks last year, a long way off from the 13.5 sacks he recorded in 2006. The huge DE Haloti Ngata and NT Kelly Gregg are both quality run stoppers for Baltimore. If Pryce can improve on his lackluster performance a year ago this should be a solid group for the 2009 Baltimore Ravens Defensive Line.
2009 Baltimore Ravens LinebackersTerrell Suggs and Ray Lewis are as the best linebacker tandem in the league. Both were free agents this past offseason, but Baltimore placed the franchise tag on Suggs and signed Lewis to seven year contract extension. Lewis plays with immense passion year in and year out and truly seems to fire up his teammates for every play. He has been around for a while now yet still hits as hard as anyone in the game. Both Suggs and Lewis were Pro Bowl selections in 2008 and should once again have big years for the hard hitting Baltimore defense. Bart Scott's departure will no doubt be felt, however Baltimore is has high hopes for their third round pick from a year ago Tavares Gooden and he is expected to step into the starting role. Jarrett Johnson also is expected to start for the Ravens. Even though Scott will be missed, the 2009 Baltimore Ravens Linebackers should once again create a menacing core.
2009 Baltimore Ravens SecondaryEd Reed is widely regarded as the best free safety in the league and many believe is the best overall defensive player in the NFL. He tied his career high last year with nine interceptions and took ran two of those back to the house for touchdowns. Anytime Ed Reed gets his hands on the ball, he is threat to score. Baltimore released veteran cornerback Chris McAllister and signed free agent Dominique Foxworth from the Atlanta Falcons to replace him. Also gone is back up safety Jim Leonhard, who came in and played a big role in many of the Baltimore Ravens games last season. Fabian Washington will line up opposite Foxworth and be the other starting cornerback. Dawan Landry and Tom Zbikowski are both solid hard hitting strong safeties. Once again this 2009 Baltimore Ravens Ravens Secondary should be a ball hawking group in the upcoming season.
