The 2009 AFC Conference Season Preview shows us that the AFC is going to be a beast again. The 2008 AFC division winners were the Tennessee Titans, Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins, and San Diego Chargers. The Titans won the AFC South and were the top seed in the conference finishing with a record of 13-3. The No. 2 seed was the Pittsburgh Steelers who were the AFC North Champions with a record of 12-4. The 3rd seed in the AFC was the Miami Dolphins who won the AFC East with an 11-5 record. San Diego was the winner of the AFC West Division and earned the 4th seed heading into the playoffs. The wild card teams were the Indianapolis Colts and the Baltimore Ravens who were the 5th and 6th seeds respectively. In the Wild Card Round the Chargers edged the Colts 23-17 and the Ravens blew out the Dolphins 27-9. The Divisional Round saw the top seeded Titans bounced by the Ravens 13-10 while the Steelers defeated the Chargers 35-24. The Steelers then went on to beat the Ravens in the AFC Championship by a score of 23-14. The Steelers went on to win an exciting Super Bowl when they defeated the Arizona Cardinals by a score of 27-23.
Some of the AFC's marquee matchups in 2009 are in Week 4 when the Steelers host the Chargers and in Week 10 when the Colts host the Patriots. The Steelers and Ravens then renew their heated rivalry in Week 12 at Balitmore and play again at Pittsburgh in Week 16. The AFC East will be won by the New England Patriots who will be the top seeded team in the conference finishing with a 14-2 record. The AFC West will again be won by the San Diego Chargers who will be the No. 2 seed in the conference at 13-3. The Super Bowl Champion Steelers will win the AFC North and be the 3rd seed in the conference with a record of 12-4. The Indianapolis Colts will be the 4th seed in the conference and win the AFC South with a record of 11-5. The Ravens and the Texans will be the Wild Card teams both finishing at 10-6. The top 2 seeded teams will both make the AFC Championship Game with the Patriots defeating the Chargers in an exciting matchup 33-30.
