2010 Jacksonville Jaguars Preview | 2010 NFL Team Previews
The 2009 version of the Jacksonville Jaguars is bound to be a lot better than the 2008 squad. Only going 5-11 in 2008, the 2009 Jacksonville Jaguars have much room to improve on last year's campaign. There have been some losses, of key players, as well as additions of players that are sure to make an impact. The 2009 Jacksonville Jaguars Season Preview would appear to be bright provided they can keep players healthy. Jack Del Rio returns to the helm, once again, in his seventh season as Jaguars head coach. Among additions to his coaching staff includes Mel Tucker- defensive coordinator, Russ Purnell- special teams coordinator, Johnny Cox- quality control/offense coach, Cory Undlin- defensive assistant coach, and Luke Richesson as well as Jason George, join the staff as strength and conditioning coach, and assistant coach, respectively.

2009 Jacksonville Jaguars Free Agency And Trades
2009 Jacksonville Jaguars NFL DraftIn the 2009 Jacksonville Jaguars NFL Draft, the Jaguars looked to bolster their aging offensive line, with their first two picks in the draft. At 8th overall, the Jaguars went with Eugene Monroe, OT from Virginia. Then, in the second round, with pick 39, the Jaguars selected Eben Britton, OT from Arizona. With their third pick, at pick 72 overall, the Jaguars picked up Terrance Knighton, DT from Temple. The Jags are looking to fill the void left by Marcus Stroud, and an aging John Henderson. Staying with defense, the Jaguars selected defensive back, Derek Cox, from William and Mary, with the 73rd overall pick. In rounds 4 and 5, the Jaguars shifted to drafting wide receivers Mike Thomas, Arizona, and Jarrett Dillard, Rice, with their 107th and 144th picks, respectively. In round 6, the Jaguars gambled on another transitional player, Zach Miller at TE. Miller, drafted at 180 overall, came from Nebraska-Omaha, as a converted TE from the QB position, somewhat reminiscent of the Matt Jones selection. The Jaguars last two picks came in round 7, at picks 250 and 253. With pick 250, the Jaguars selected RB Rashad Jennings, and bigger back, from Liberty. Then, with their last pick, 253, the Jags returned to the WR position, taking Tiquan Underwood from the University of Rutgers.
2009 Jacksonville Jaguars QuarterbacksThe 2009 Jacksonville Jaguars Quarterbacks will be led once again by David Garrard. This is going to be Garrard's chance to re-prove himself, and show that he is worth the contract, he signed in the off-season, before the 2008 campaign. Last year, Garrard's performances were abysmal. With a make shift offensive line, and an ineffective running game, kept Garrard on the run, which also made him ineffective. The Jaguars got away from Jaguar-Ball, which normally includes a heavy dose of the run, which kept the offense unbalanced all year. You know things are bad, when Matt Jones is your best receiver. Things look to be different in 2009, as Garrard leads the Jaguars again. He should have better targets, to throw to, a better offensive line, to keep him upright, as well as good running game, which will also take pressure off Garrard. Waiting in the wings are free agency pick up, Todd Bouman, who came over from the Baltimore Ravens, Paul Smith, 2nd year quarterback from Tulsa, and 25 year old rookie Todd Boeckman, from Ohio State.
2009 Jacksonville Jaguars Running BacksThe backfield for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2009 will look much different than 2008. The Jaguars parted ways with veteran Fred Taylor, who has since made his way to the New England Patriots. For many Jags fans, this was a sad day, as Taylor had started his career with the Jaguars, and it looked as though he would finish it there too. It is most likely that Taylor was a casualty of the salary cap. With Taylor out the door, this leaves the starting position to Maurice Jones-Drew. Jones-Drew is an explosive back, who is small, heavy, and has great balance, with a burst of speed. Maurice Jones-Drew has dazzled fans in his first few seasons with the Jaguars, and now he has the spotlight to himself in the 2009 Jacksonville Jaguars Running Backs department. Other backs for the Jaguars include Greg Jones, in his sixth season out of Florida State. Greg Jones is a big bruiser, who is sure to see more carries this year. Backing up those two will be Alvin Pearman, Chauncey Washington, and rookie draft pick Rashad Jennings.
2009 Jacksonville Jaguars Wide ReceiversComing into 2009, the Jacksonville Jaguars have cleaned out their receiving corps. After finally parting ways with high draft picks Reggie Williams, and Matt Jones, the Jaguars freed up some cap space to bring in more talented receivers. With those subtractions, the Jaguars were able to bring in veteran wide receiver Torry Holt from the St. Louis Rams. Holt, a perenial Pro-Bowler, should bring the spark, and the experience the Jaguars lack in receiving. With the exception of Dennis Northcutt, the Jaguars receiving corps are still very young. Holt and Northcutt's combined 21 seasons of NFL experience, is met with only 9 seasons, combined, between 9 other receivers, 6 of whom are rookies. The Jaguars are sure to trim from the 2009 Jacksonville Jaguars Wide Receivers roster, as the season approaches.
2009 Jacksonville Jaguars Offensive Line
If the Jaguars were going to get back to running the ball, in 2009, they were going to have to revamp an old O-Line. Last year, the line was riddled with injuries, and tragedy. Before the season began, the Jaguars lost Richard Collier. Collier was shot several times, shortly before the '08 season began, which left him paralyzed, from the waist down, which included amputation of Collier's left leg. If things weren't bad enough, the Jags saw several linemen, go down in the first game of the year, against the Tennessee Titans. All year, the Jaguars Offensive Line were on their heels, but things should be different for the 2009 Jacksonville Jaguars Offensive Line. Since the end of the 2008 season, the Jaguars have released veteran tackle Khalif Barnes as well as veteran guard Chris Naeole. To address those losses, the Jaguars went with two offensive linemen, with their first two picks of the 2009 NFL Draft. Eugene Monroe, 8th overall, and Eben Britton, 37th overall, look to fill those shoes, left by the veteran linemen. Those two are joined by free agent pickup Tra Thomas, who has made his way over from the Philadelphia Eagles. Though the Jaguars will be looking for production, out of their rookies, they are not left without other options. Brad Meester returns to anchor the line, from the center position, and Vince Manuwai returns for his seventh season at offensive guard.
2009 Jacksonville Jaguars Defensive LineThe 2009 Jacksonville Jaguars Defensive Line should look pretty familiar except for the subtraction of veteran defensive end Paul Spicer, who is now with the New Orleans Saints. Back are defensive tackle John Henderson, and others which includes the Jaguars' 2008 First Round pick, Derrick Harvey, defensive end from Florida. Others expected to perform at Reggie Hayward in his 9th season at defensive end, as well as Rob Meier, 10th season at DE/DT. The rest of the stable is full of inexperienced players, including 2009 3rd round draft pick Terrance Knighton, DT from Temple. It will be on this group, to put the pressure on the opposing quarterback, something the 2008 Jaguars were missing, which greatly effected the defense, as a whole.
2009 Jacksonville Jaguars LinebackersThe key to the 2009 Jacksonville Jaguars Linebackers may be addition through subtraction. After the 2008 season, the Jaguars parted ways with veteran linebacker Mike Peterson. Peterson, at one time, was the best linebacker the Jaguars had, and he was a valuable commodity. At some point, during last year's campaign, Mike Peterson and Jack Del Rio, head coach, began to butt heads. Eventually, it lead to a public display of dismay, and Peterson being suspended, by the team, for what was essentially the rest of the season. With Peterson gone, the Jaguars are left with a young, but talented, group of linebackers. Coming into 2009, the linebacker group will be led by Justin Durant as well as Daryl Smith, who leads the linebackers with 6 years of NFL experience. Other names include Clint Ingram, Brian Iwuh, and Thomas Williams. The Jaguars have also brought in two rookies, to test out in the linebacking core.
2009 Jacksonville Jaguars SecondaryThe 2009 Jacksonville Jaguars Secondary will be led once again by veteran DB Rashean Mathis, who is now in his 7th season out of Bethune Cookman University. Backing Mathis up will be safety sensation Reggie Nelson, First Round Pick from 2007 NFL Draft. Other than those two, the Jaguars are looking at some new faces in the defensive backfield. Safety Gerald Sensabaugh is now gone, to the Dallas Cowboys, and has been replaced with safety Pierson Piroleau, which came over from the Philadelphia Eagles. Marlon Mcree will also be a part of the safety group which is currently made up of Nelson, and Piroleau and others. The Jaguars are looking for big things from 2009 Third Round draft pick, Derek Cox, from William and Mary. Cox is the only player, in the defensive secondary, drafted by the Jaguars in 2009.
