John Fox, the head coach of the Carolina panthers since 2002, is looking froward to a much improved 2009 Carolina Panthers Season. Finishing the season last year with a 12-4 record, 8-0 at home, the panthers look to be one of the elite NFC teams at the start of the 2009 season. Under John Fox the panthers have an impressive 56-47 record overall with two NFC championship appearances and one trip to the Superbowl, in which the New England Patriots got the best of them. As far as the 2009 Carolina Panthers Season Preview, this year John Fox and the Panthers look to advance past the regular season and back into the playoffs for a chance at a 2009 Superbowl victory. The coaching staff of the Panthers has changed very little in the last five years a good sign for the panthers of 2009. Offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson enters his 3rd year running the offense, and enjoyed the success of a running game that ended 2008, 3rd in rushing yards per game (152.3) and 7th in total points per game (25.9). Defensive coordinator Mike Trgovac enters his 7th season with the Panthers and has room for improvement, as the offense kept the team in most ball games last year. The panthers finished 12th in total points against (20.6) and 18th in total yards against (331.2) so even a bit of improvement has a chance of raising the Panthers to the next level. Assistant head coach/running backs coach Jim Skipper might have one of the easiest jobs in the NFL, as the two headed running game of Deangelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart couldn't not be stopped last year. A trend coach John Fox plans on exploiting in the 2009 season.

2009 Carolina Panthers Free Agency And TradesThe panthers are keeping things similar to last season not changing the roster much at all. In fact they resigned long time Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme to a 5 year extension through the 2014 season. As well as franchising Julius Peppers for the last year of his contract, hoping Peppers and newly drafted DE Everette Brown can force opposing quarterbacks to turn the bowl over under constant pressure. Other Minor acquisitions gotten during the 2009 Carolina Pantheres Free Agency and Trades include sighing 3rd year Guard Justin Geisinger from the Washington Redskins and resigning James Anderson at the linebacker position.
2009 Carolina Panthers NFL DraftAlready containing one of the leagues best offenses, the panthers decided to attack the 2009 Carolina Panthers NFL Draft with a defensive mentality, taking defensive players with their first three picks. The panthers didn't get their first pick until the second round selecting Florida States own, Everette Brown with the 43rd pick overall. With the 59th pick overall ans last pick in the 2nd round the Panthers selected 6 foot 1 SS Sherrod martin from Troy University in hopes he can be a future starter for the panthers secondary. The panthers continued to stack the defensive line by taking DT Corvey Irvin from Georgia, in the 3rd round, with 93rd pick overall. the first offensive player taken off the board by the Panthers is RB Mike Goodson from Texas A&M at the 111th pick overall. Goodson's role with the panthers will be as back up, who might not see to much action in his first year. The Panthers get a little more physical in the 4th round taking the large Full Back from Syracuse, Tony Fiammetta with the 128th pick overall. Fiammetta is one of two Full backs the Panthers have on the roster, allowing him a chance at playing time in his first year with the Panthers. It's back to the offense in the 5th round with Offensive Tackle Duke Robinson from Oklahoma, standing 6 foot 5, 335 pounds. Robinson comes into the league as one of the largest Tackles taken in this years draft, and a steal at 163 pick overall. The last pick in the 2009 NFL draft comes at 216 overall, the panthers selected CB Captain Munnerlyn from South Carolina.
2009 Carolina Panthers Quarterbacks
The Panthers have relied on Jake Delhomme's ability to make the big play since he joined the team in the 2003 season. Though he had a sub par season compared to his standards last year, Delhomme hopes to improve his game play in the 2009 campaign. After only playing 3 games in the 2007 season do to injury, Delhomme came back to the Panthers and started all 16 games in 2008, throwing for 15 touchdown passes, 12 interceptions and just over 3,000 yards. This was his worst outing to date since his first year with the panthers in 2003. The panthers did win the 2003 NFC Championship in addition to losing to the patriots in one of the Super Bowls greatest games that year. The panthers know a chance to the promise land does not fall directly on Delhomme's shoulders, it's a team game, and a game the panthers have come to play well. Behind Delhomme this year at back up is Josh McCown, a good back up that has some NFL action under his belt, together they will make up the 2009 Carolina Panthers Quarterbacks and hopefully lead them to the superbowl.
2009 Carolina Panthers Running BacksThe running game for the Carolina Panthers flourished towards the end of the season, as Deangelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart became more comfortable in a two back system. This two Back system has become a norm amongst NFL teams in the recent years and, Williams and Stewart might be the best of the bunch. Finishing third in total rushing yards on the season with 152 ypg, Williams and Stewart look to improve, and improve they will. Deangelo Williams enters his 4th year with the panthers and had the best year in his young career last season while splitting caries with rookie Jonathan Stewart. Williams finished with 18 touchdowns on the season and just over 1,500 yards on the ground, not to mention two passing touchdowns. Stewart finished his rookie season with 10 touchdown runs and over 800 yards on the ground, and both players played in all 16 games Last season a trend John Fox hopes to continue. The 2009 Carolina Panthers Running Backs behind Williams and Stewart begin with 9 year Veteran Brad Hoover who should start the season at full back, and end with second year man Decori Birmingham and rookie Mike Goodson from Texas A&M. Leaving the Panthers with no experienced players behind Williams and Stewart.
2009 Carolina Panthers Wide ReceiversThe 2009 Panthers Wide Receivers look the same as it always has for the panthers since they resigned Mushin Muhammad last year. That makes 4 years now that Muhammad, Steve Smith, and Jake Delhomme have played catch together. Muhammad had a good year in 2008 catching 65 balls and 5 touchdowns for just under 1000 yards in his return to the team he started his career with. Steve Smith also started his career with the Carolina panthers but has not produced with the same efficiency he did in his break out 2005 campaign. Smith started the 2008 season with a two game suspension, slowing down the quick start he predicted he would have. The fact still remains that in just 14 games, smith finished with 78 receptions 6 touchdowns and over 1,400 passing yards. The passing game looks to get better as the Panthers hope to add third year man Dwayne Jarret into the offense more. Drafted 45th overall by the panthers in 2007, 6'4 and 212 pounds, 22 year old Dwayne Jarrett should break out this year standing opposite of Steve Smith, who gathers defenders attention like a loose fumble. Behind the three man set of Smith, Muhammad, and Jarrett is newly acquired Marcus Monk, Kevin McMahan, Kenneth Moore, Ryne Robinson ,and Jason Carter. There are also tight ends Gary Bamidge and Jeff King, and starter Dante Rosario.
2009 Carolina Panthers Offensive LineThe power house the 2009 Carolina Panthers Offensive Line that led the rushing attack of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart begins with Center Ryan Kalil from USC entering his 3rd year with the team. Veteren of 8 years, Vincent Keydrick will lead the right side at right guard this year, along with right tackle Jeff Otah. The left side of the line is protected by a pair of 6 '4 guys in left tackle Jordan Gross and left guard Travelle Wharton. This offensive line led the number 3 ranked rushing offense to the playoffs last year, with hopes of improving not just the rushing game but the teams ability to get to Miami for the Superbowl.
2009 Carolina Panthers Defensive LineThe 2009 Carolina Panthers Defensive Line is led by this years franchised player Julius Peppers. The Panthers and Peppers were unable to reach an agreement on a trade, so the Panthers put the franchise tag on him, and kept him for an exorbitant amount of money. It remains to be seen how well Peppers will perform for the Panthers following the dispute with management. Peppers has been with the Carolina Panthers since 2002 and has produced an average of 10 sacks a season despite his 2007 season where he only accumulated 2.5 sacks. In 2009, however, Peppers will be combined with another talented pass rusher in rookie and second round draft pick Everette Brown from Florida State University. Everette Brown led the ACC in sacks last year and looks to be the starter at left end this year, a position he played his whole collegiate career. Plugging up the middle for the Panthers are 300 plus pound Damione Lewis and Maake Kemoeatu.
2009 Carolina Panthers LinebackersThe defensive presence for the Panthers starts with the linebacker play, which may be the lowest form of talent on the team. Starting with strong side linebacker Na'il Diggs who comes into his 9th season out of Ohio State. Diggs stands 6' 4 and is the biggest of the 2009 Carolina Panthers Linebackers. Middle linebackers Jon Beason and Thomas Davis look to control the run as the Panthers allowed 119.5 yards a game on the ground finishing 20th in the league for that category. Weak side linebacker Thomas Davis starts his 5th season out of Georgia and should produce an outside pass rush behind rookie Everette Brown, a combination that could cause match up problems for opposing offensive lineman.
2009 Carolina Panthers SecondaryAfter releasing starting corner back Ken Lucas the Panthers find themselves with a 2009 Carolina Panthers Secondary position to fill. The left corner back position is secured with the play of Chris Gamble who has produced well for the Panthers since being drafted 5 years ago. Third year man Richard Marshall looks to fill the position but if he fails to control the right side of the field C.J. Wilson will take over due to his 6'1 frame. Securing the box for run support is strong safety Chris Harris being backed up by hometown star Quinton Teal from Coastal Carolina. The starting free safety for the panthers is Charles Godfrey entering only his second year of play in the NFL, proving he is capable of controlling the long ball for that defense.
