Washington has high expectations for the 2009 Redskins Season. Jim Zorn returns for his second year as the head coach and ended up running with a .500 win ratio in the '08 season. He was initially the offensive coordinator, but after an run that received much merit from his superiors, Zorn was promoted to head coach. The '08 season began with a 6-2 win, but tapered off as the season continued. Greg Blache, another second season coaching veteran, returns as the defensive coordinator. Injuries have stopped the defensive line from shining as they could, but players have had the entire off season to rest on the mend. Continuing with the trend in the 2009 Washington Redskins Season Preview is offensive coordinator Sherman Smith who will return for his second consecutive year with the Skins. He has been working hard with Zorn to improve overall offensive capabilities. Scott Wachenheim will be the new tight end coach for the Skins going into Washington Redskins 2009 schedule. Scott had 21 years experience at the collegiate level, so his expertise should bring a great bounty to the Skins abilities. Another new addition to the coaching staff is Chip Garber, who was named the defensive quality control coach in February of '09. He brings 27 years coaching experience to the field and should serve to raise the bar for the Redskins.

2009 Washington Redskins Free Agency And TradesThe Redskins have received several players through the 2009 Washington Redskins Free Agency and Trades. Amongst these players was guard Derrick Dockery, received from the Bills. Punter Hunter Smith came from Indianapolis to lend his foot to the Redskins as one of their kickers. Defensive tackles Albert Haynesworth from Tennessee and Renaldo Wynn from the New York Giants will also join up with the Redskins to lend their heavy hitting abilities to the teams defense. Turnovers and sacks are to be expected out of these two gentlemen, especially if paired with one another.
2009 Washington Redskins NFL DraftThe 2009 Washington Redskins NFL Draft began on the 13th pick for them, and their round 1 choice netted them Brian Orakpo. Orakpo is a defensive end, playing as an edge rusher, paired with Albert Haynesworth, former Pro Bowler. These rather large individuals will give the outside lines on both sides powerful stopping force. Corner back Kevin Barnes came to the Skins through the third round, giving them a well rounded player. Round 5 garnered Cody Glenn, linebacker of Nebraska, bringing the toughness of a rhinoceros with the athleticism of that is difficult to match. Round six introduced Robert Henson to the team as an outside line backer, inexperienced as he might be. He is expected to be primarily on special teams until he is ready for main play. The Redskins received two round 7 picks, which gave them Eddie Williams, the tight end, and Marko Mitchell, a wide receiver from Nevada.
2009 Washington Redskins QuarterbacksJason Campbell will continue to go with his lead quarterback status, despite recent criticisms. The failure to attain big names such as Cutler or Sanchez left them with the only choice to dig deeper into other possibilities for the 2009 Washington Redskins Quarterbacks or stick with Campbell. Campbell loses his contract at the end of the season, and at this point a resign does not seem like a great possibility. This may prompt Jason to step up and improve or he may lose his position. He has improved, statistically speaking, over the past few years, but this may not have been enough. The Redskins have brought Chase Daniel in as a back up quarterback and an unsigned free agent.
2009 Washington Redskins Running BacksZorn has been referred to as a air-based coach, but the running game has maintained a large workload and shouldn't change running into the next season. Clinton Portis will continue to shine as one of the 2009 Washington Redskins Running Backs, having accrued almost 1,500 yards in the '08 season. Ladell Betts is another heavy runner for the team, who made up for an injured Portis back in the '06 season. The two of these men should be more than enough for the ground based game the Redskins should utilize. If pushed to their max, the running backs belonging to the Redskins have great playoff potential.
2009 Washington Redskins Wide ReceiversAs for the 2009 Washingotn Redskins Wide Receivers, Santana Moss will continue to shine out on the field, running routes almost unequaled in the NFL. Moss's ability to change the winds of a game runs nearly unprecedented, despite his relatively smaller size. Due to this being common knowledge, Moss typically finds himself with double coverage. Injuries keep the Skins in a serious prone position, as seen with Malcolm Kelly. Kelly had a ruined 2008 season, but his return to practices in the off season showed a vast improvement in his abilities. Devin Thomas continues to step up his game, and should provide for a highly impressive performance over this season.
2009 Washington Redskins Offensive Line
The main theme behind the 2009 Washington Redskins Offensive Line is experience. Of all of the starting offensive linemen, only one will be under 30. Derrick Dockery was brought back in from the Bills, returning to the Redskins after a two year break period. Chris Samuels, six time Pro Bowler, will bring his prestige back to the line for the Skins, backed on the right by either Jon Jansen or Stephon Heyer. Heyer had come close to claiming the right tackle position, but Jansen took back over when Heyer was injured. Both players are better at different tasks, making for a solid line that can handle different variables according to the play styles of different teams. The only downfall of the 30+ year old linemen is that injuries could once again rattle the Skins.
2009 Washington Redskins Defensive LineThe 2009 Washington Redskins Defensive Line is the one part of the team that is changing drastically. Jason Taylor, one of the Skins strongest defensive ends, left the team to the free agency pool, but Albert Haynesworth from the Titans should more than make up for the loss. Haynesworth brings a commanding presence to the field, as he stands at 6'6" and over 300 pounds. Draftee Brian Orakpo will also be joining the defending line, and he could perhaps start a promising career. He was the 13th overall pick in the draft and was drawn from Texas. Phillip Daniels may make a staggering return after being on the mend for the entire '08 season after a knee injury.
2009 Washington Redskins Linebackers11 year veteran, London Fletcher, will return from the '08 season, hopefully to live up to what was perhaps his best year in the NFL. Despite his rising age, Fletcher has continued to provide the Redskins with a linebacker that is almost unequaled. The outside line will no longer see Marcus Washington in the line up, as he is yet another player who was released into the free agency. Orakpo, if not used on the defensive line, may end up taking his place as one of the 2009 Washington Redskins Linebackers. Rocky McIntosh will cover the "weak" side, and he hopes to improve upon his tackles from last season.
2009 Washington Redskins SecondaryThe corners have been a tough spot for the Skins as of late, but this year DeAngelo Hall was resigned and the addition of could provide the Skins with the cornerbacks they need to add to their defenses. Carlos Rogers made a stellar return last year after recovering from a knee injury, and Kevin Barnes, a draft pick, will be adding to the corners as a 2009 Washinton Redskins Secondary, if not the nickel. LaRon Landry is and up and comer, but his roll as safety should allow him to continue to shine.

Round 3: Pick 80 - Kevin Barnes CB (Maryland)
Round 5: Pick 158 - Cody Glenn LB (Nebraska)
Round 6: Pick 186 - Robert Henson OLB (TCU)
