2010 New Orleans Saints Preview | 2010 NFL Team Previews
The Saints have the town of New Orleans behind them one hundred percent, but they would like to see their team make the playoffs for the first time since 2006. To start off the 2009 New Orleans Saints Season Preview has numerous bright spots in the offensive department which was not their problem last season. They lost five of their eight loses by three points or less. The defense has to put that high on the list of things to do before the 2009 New Orleans Saints Season begins, they lead in the fourth quarter of most of those games and could not get a stop when they needed it most. This year will be Greg Williams' first season at cefensive coordinator, they hope he can put a new twist on the 23rd ranked defense of last year. The Saints went out and picked up a couple guys for offense and brought in a lot of depth to that defense that really needed help. Deuce McAllister was let go after many years of nothing but a classy guy on and off the field due to bad knees. With Drew Brees at quarterback the offense should still be pretty good. We will have to see what Reggie Bush can do with more of a load on his shoulders.

2009 New Orleans Saints NFL DraftThe New Orleans franchise only had four draft picks this past draft, defense was the main objective for the Saints. Their first pick in the 2009 New Orleans Saints NFL Draft was Malcolm Jenkins out of Ohio State, he played cornerback in college and could see some time at safety. Speed is not his best skill but his athletic abilities to break up a play or get a tackle is there. Chip Vaughn was their next selection and at about six foot and two inches he weighs in at 220 pounds, he has the size any team would want for a safety. Wake Forests' Stanley Arnoux is a tough nose linebacker, but he is only good in small areas got to try to be more of a sideline to sideline defender.
2009 New Orleans Saints QuarterbacksThe quarterback spot in New Orleans has no competetion going on, the Saints made an excellent move three years ago by going out and getting Drew Brees. His first two years have been nothing but shown he has elite talent that rarely results in mistakes, which is why he will continue on to be one of the 2009 New Orleans Saints Quarterbacks. The Saints offense has been full steam ahead with Brees at the wheel, it helps that he has weapons that have all shown they can break plays to the end zone. Brees gets better each year if he does better than last season he will have some NFL records, this past year he missed Dan Marinos record for most passing yards in a season by 16 yards, he threw for 5,069 yards last year. Backing Brees up will most likely be veteran Mark Brunell unless Joey Harrington shows some real improvement from last year.
2009 New Orleans Saints Running BacksThe face of the running backs for the Saints has been Deuce McAllister, but that will change this year after the Saints had to look to the future and release him. Another big bruising longtime Saint fullback Mike Karney has also tested the free agent waters, in his case the Saints did to and picked up Heath Evans to be a blocking force or goal line punch. The hole left by Deuce has Reggie Bush to get a lot more rushes this season even though he is best at receiving short passes to show his strong burst of speed he can produce. If Reggie is not getting it done so much in the rushing game you will see a bunch of Pierre Thomas, he will still receive quite a few reps every game. Thomas was very impressive for the Saints coming down the stretch in 2008, and has proved that he can carry the load, if needed. The 2009 New Orleans Running Backs third stringer will be Mike Bell who they picked up last year but did not see much playing time.
2009 New Orleans Saints Wide ReceiversThe Saints have a number of guys who shown if you give them a chance they will not let the team down, they found that out after the season opener when Marques Colston went out for five games with torn ligaments in his thumb. When he came back he played alright but far behind his potential. With him healthy and Lance Moore who had a specactular year last year with a chance to shine again this year as a starter. Devery Henderson who had a couple nice games last season should get the last starting spot on the 2009 New Orleans Saints Wide Reciever, unless Robert Meachem or Adrian Arrington two young receivers who have skills step up and impress in preseason.Jeremy Shockey had a below average year last season with some injuries, he should still start. His playing time may get smaller if he does not produce this year. Look for veteran Billy Miller and Dan Campbell to compete for some tight end playing time.
2009 New Orleans Saints Offensive LineThe team has another big part of their offense back in all five line men returning to their starting positions in the 2009 New Orleans Saints Offensive Line. Why is that good, since Brees has been there for three years has only been sacked 52 times. Last year they allowed 13 which was a franchise record low. In the middle of the line at center will be Jonathon Goodwin as he anchors that line. Jammal Brown is back at tackle along with Jon Stinchcomb playing opposite side of Brown. The guards returning, Jahri Evans and Carl Nicks, are ready for action to start. The Saints have a little depth with guard/center Nick Leckey and two tackles in Zach Strief and Jermon Bushrod showing they can get out there and play with the big boys to.
2009 New Orleans Saints Defensive LineThe 2009 New Orleans Saints Defensive Line is hoping to be much better and healthier than last year, the two starting ends both struggled and were injuried. Will Smith had surgery for a sports hernia during the offseason, while Charles Grant missed the second half of the year. In their absence back ups Bobby McCray and Jeff Charleston showed the can play, but the Saints would love to rely on two healthy starters. The tackles Sedrick Ellis, who in thirteen games he came up with 4 sacks, and Kendrick Clancy will be starting. They bring in a defensive end Marcus Stroud and tackle Rod Coleman come in for some depth.
2009 New Orleans Saints LinebackersThe core from last year is still intacted and will stay on as the 2009 New Orleans Saints Linebackers, with the leader of the group being middle linebacker Jonathon Vilma. He showed the team thanks for giving him a nice five year deal by getting 151 tackles and forcing 2 turnovers. Scott Fujita comes back to retake his strong side job back. On the weak side they expect Scott Shanle to start but look for veteran Dan Morgan is looking for one more chance to show he can still play at top level. Other back ups Mark Simoneau, Troy Evans and Marvin Mitchell are all capiable of making plays.
2009 New Orleans Saints SecondaryThis is a spot in the 2009 New Orleans Saints Secondary positions where they cleaned house after getting rid of corner Mike McKenzie and free safeties Josh Bullock and Kevin Kaesviharn. The secondary gave up an average of 221.7 yards of passing passing per game, which is pretty bad. Tracy Porter was doing great last year before he dilocated his wrist in the middle of the season. Starting at the other corner spot should be Jabari Greer unless Randall Gay gets in there at nickel corner. New draft pick Malcolm Jenkins may be able to make instant results in nickel or dime formation. Look for Darren Sharper to take the free safety job and may be the leader of the secondary. Roman Harper should be starting at the strong side safety spot.
